Apparently, nosebleeds are quite frequent in Japanese males. I have no idea why this is so, but I think it has something to do with the climate.

I don't know if there's a direct correlation of nosebleeds and arousal, but the expression has been attached when used in anime, to save the need of having to illustrate an arousal, which may be offensive towards younger audiences.

Other means of showing arousal in anime includes blushing and "pink frosted frames" (border the genga or frame) that give off an atmosphere of eroticism.

nope, it's rare but you'll find that in some comedy animes. Girl's can nosebleeds in the same situations. Like in Girls Bravo where that combat maid always gets nosebleeds when she thinks naughty thoughts about that girl.

Other cases, Yamato Nadeshiko ShichiHenge where sunako gets nosebleeds when she sees people appearing too beautiful and Karin where Karin get's nosebleeds from looking at that guy.

This happens often in the Anime Naruto whenever the main character Naruto uses his "Sexy no Jitsu" in which he transforms into a very beautiful and naked girl. Sometimes referred as the Japanese Slapstick. This rarely occurs in real life, but is based on a Japanese "old wives' tale", which states that becoming sexually excited can cause nosebleeds. Such occurrences are generally played for laughs and signify "loserhood" and/or virginity. This conception regarding nosebleeds also exists in Chinese culture. The English trip-hop musician Tricky makes a reference to sexual arousal causing nosebleeds in the song Abbaon Fat Tracks in his 1995 record Maxinquaye."

maybe they get nosebleeds because when they see or think of something like nudity they're blood pressure starts rising to the point where the blood flows out from the nose.

Nosebleeds in anime has always been a cliched and tiresome thing to watch. It just doesn't seem humorous anymore.

I always used to wonder what the nosebleeds were about.

It sorta depends how they use it... if they use it in a more original way I suppose it would be funnier. It's become sorta cliched...
