Large Hadron Collider: opportunity or risk?
Posted 8/23/08
The Large Hadron Collider, abbreviated to LHC, is the largest, most advanced and most expensive scientific instrument ever created by humankind. It’s goal is to artificially recreate the conditions of the Big Bang to learn more about the relations between energy and matter, and to verify the Standard Model. LHC will accelerate protons to cosmic speeds and let them collide (crash into each other) to break them open so scientists from all over the world can see what’s inside of them.

Exciting? Sure. But never before on Earth so much energy will be accumulated into one single particle – more energy than a train at top speed concentrated in less than a grain of sand. Exceptional opportunities come with exceptional risk… some scientists believe black holes will be created, which could eventually lead to the end of the world as we know it. Still 18 more days before LHC launch…

What do you think about LHC? Are you concerned about what might or might not happen? Do you think it’s an interesting experiment, or just a waste of money (LHC cost = 4.6 T€)? Share your thoughts… while you still can!
(any dangerous scientific experiments from the past or future may be discussed in this thread).

For those who haven’t heard of LHC yet, or like to have a good laugh I highly recommend watching this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j50ZssEojtM&fmt=18

I'm not all that conserned.. people thought we would blow up the world with the fist atom bomb testing because we didn't know if there was a limit to how big the explosion would be or something like that. If we get detroyed by our curiosity then so be it!

that would mean... all anime is destroyed as well! I'm not looking forward to that

Humans are never contented with anything, really. So it will be worth to risk anything if we can find something to actually help us. But if they will just create some random, dangerous and useless piece of junk, then it will not be worth risking anime

I doubt that the knowledge of the inner structure of protons will actually help humankind... it's interesting to know, but to spend so much money on it... the scientists state however that there is no other way to find out than building such a huge device with our tax money

They're using OUR tax money? Then I don't like the idea now. There's better things to spend our money with, like helping third-world countries.

But what do we know, they could be spending half of the world's resources to do something sneaky and doing secret experiments now.
