Episode 1

A Surprise From A Month

“Melody Beloven, please get to the Principal’s Office.”

All the heads in the classroom suddenly turned to her. As if she was a peculiar, strange lab animal which you could never be sure how would it react. But the reason for this wasn’t because she was peculiar or strange but because she was usually unreacted to many things.

Well not this time. Melody was surprised. She was in this school for three years and never once she was called to the Principal’s Office. She was sure neither the Principal nor the student who made the announcement could match a certain picture in their minds with the name they called.

She slowly stood up. The teacher nodded her firmly, meaning “oh well, go then”. When she walked her way through the desks to the door everyone was watching her. As she was opening the door the teacher said “Come back to the classroom as soon as you are done, Melody. Don’t walk around the hallways trying to ditch the class”.

Melody looked at her teacher furiously. She never ditched a class in three years. So when she was leaving, she shut the door a little harder than she should have.

Melody was at the third floor. The Principal’s Office was at the first, so the visitors or the rich and precious parents of the students wouldn’t have to climb that much. As she was walking to the stairs, she thought why she was called. She knew she hadn’t done anything wrong. It must have been about her grades and exams or…it was about home. She thought the latter was unlikely. Her relationship with her mother wasn’t really good. She came to school only for two times in three years and one of them happened when she was registering Melody to the school… They were never seeing each other except the summer holidays. And even when Melody was home, her mother was trying with her best to stay as far away as she could from her. She was going to one club and then another with her boy friend who was someone different every week. Until Melody’s time to go back to the boarding school comes. Almost each time a greasy haired, leather jacketed man was getting in to the house as she was leaving it with two suitcases in her hands. Her mother’s only contribution to Melody’s life was paying her school taxes each year and forcing a roll of money into her hands as she was getting into the cab.

Her mother was beautiful. Her golden hair was all the way down to her waist and she had burning emerald eyes. She didn’t looked one day older than twenty years old with her proportional face lines and dazing body. Yes, Jasmine Beloven was beautiful. Melody had admired her years ago. When she was a child, she had been watching her brushing her hair, making up as if she was hypnotized, until Melody became her attention. Jasmine had started to change her hair, trying make ups on her. Thanks to her mom, outfit was never a problem for Melody. She always had more clothes than she needed in any style. After some time Melody realized the most important thing in her mother’s life was outer look, that she couldn’t talk special things with her or ask her opinion in many things. She had devoted her life to the vision she was seeing when she looked at the mirror and she didn’t had an answer for Melody’s questions or dreams.

As she understood that they became colder. Jasmine finally realized that Melody didn’t want any more make up, hair spray or perfume but she wanted a mother. And Melody understood that she couldn’t give it to her. Years passed and they both become irrelevant with each other. There was ‘Melody’s life’, there was ‘Her Mother’s life’ but there wasn’t ‘their life’ anymore.

Melody stopped in front of the Principal’s office. She took a deep breath and knocked the door twice slowly. A hard voice which was familiar to give orders called out “Come in!” Melody opened the door slowly and glided into the room. She walked with small steps to the Principal’s gigantic desk.

The Principal raised his head from papers and glanced towards her. As he leaned down again he asked with a flat voice “Are you Melody Beloven?”

“Yes, I am, master.”

The Principal pointed one of the armchairs with his pen and then said “You have a phone call, I just told them to call back.”

Melody sat down without noticing, “A phone call? To me?” she asked surprisingly. “Who called me?”

The Principal raising his head from the papers again with a what-are-you-?-an-idiot? look in his face, said “Your parent of course! Only the parents are allowed to call the students here.”

Melody was more surprised now. Why in the earth her mother would call her? Since when she was interested? Or had something bad happened? She felt fear mixing in with the curiosity she felt inside. Her heart started to beat fast. What could have caused her to call Melody? Her hands were sweaty already. As they always had been when she was nervous.

The Principal was not interested in her anymore. He was scratching things to some papers, then reaching out for his cup and drinking some tea. He had no idea about the situation or what was going on with Melody now. A couple of minutes later he stood up with some papers in his hand and walked to the door. As he was leaving he remembered Melody, turned back and said “I am going for lunch, when you are done you can get out yourself. Don’t forget to close the door behind you.” He looked at his watch and added “You can go directly to the lunch afterwards. Don’t go to your classroom and distract everybody for 5 minutes.” He said the last things like he was making a great gesture for her. Melody nodded and the Principal left.

She could still hear his footsteps when the phone rang. Melody was startled. She got up quickly but hesitated near the phone –second rang- then she breathed out –third rang- and took the phone. With a voice lower than she intended, she said “Hello? It’s me mom.”

Her mother’s voice was happy and excited. She said “Hi Melody! I hope you are alright? How’s your school?”

“It’s…its all good mom,” melody said bewildered. Then added quickly “What about you? Are you alright?”

“Oh, I’m good. Really cheerful actually. You should be happy for me.”

Her mother wanted Melody to ask “Why? What happened?” Even though everything seemed normal until now Melody felt that this phone call had a purpose. Something her mom hasn’t said yet. Something about herself…She felt fear touching her again. “Why? What happened?” she asked. Just the way her mother wanted.

Her mom took a deep breath on the other side of the line. Then probably with the most serious voice she had ever heard from her she said “Melody, listen to me carefully and don’t interrupt until I am done” Then said all the things Melody would remember for the rest of her life, “I met a man a couple of months ago. He is really handsome, good-natured and sweet. He is a manager and he thinks that I am very beautiful and talented. He actually wants to be my manager! Can you believe that? Anyway, we thought about this a lot and then we decided to move to Los Angeles. What do you think? Isn’t that awesome? We will settle down there and he will put me through additions. If I am good enough, which he thinks I am really good, I’ll be playing in the movies! I’ll be famous and people will know me! Brian, my manager, thinks this beauty can’t be for nothing, he says I deserve the best of everything! So, we are leaving next week. As soon as the house is sold. I will give you half of the money from the house paying it to your bank account. You will be 18 this January and then you can do anything you want! You will be totally free!”

Melody was in shock. She had felt like her brain was expanding with every word her mother said and now it was about to explode… She asked with panic and rush “But…mom?? What about me? Am I going to stay here all by myself? But…there is…there is no one we know here that I can go?”

Her mother said with a flat, rational voice “I really would like to take you with me Melody but how much chance does a mother of an almost 18 years old teenager, has? Brian said that I should hide my age and if you come with us even I if I don’t say anything, people will know, understand in time. My career vanishes then. I can’t risk it, Melody.” Tears started to flow down Melody’s eyes. Her mother, as if she felt it, tried to give her voice some warmth and softness and said “Melody you have always been so strong. You never needed anyone else. You can live perfectly by yourself and you know what, I trust you…dear…and I have faith in you. You will be glamorous and so bright; don’t worry about it at all.”

Melody spoke with a hardly audible voice “I can’t believe you are doing this to me” And then her voice got stronger with every word “You ignored me my whole life but I never thought for one second that you would leave me like this. What kind of a mother are you? How can you do this?”

There was a long silence on the other side of the line. The ticking of the wall-clock filled Melody’s ears. Then her mother spoke with a cold, cruel voice “Maybe I can do this because I never wanted to be a mother. I didn’t want it 17 years ago, I didn’t want it after your father and I don’t want it now as well.” Her voice and the imagination of her face while listening these words made her sick…She wanted to run away from this, run to an alternate reality where her life wasn’t this messed up and lonely. Her mother was saying “I am free, Melody and this is my decision. No one can stop me doing what I want…Not even you. Goodbye…” then she hung up the phone. When the echoes of the hung up traveled her mind she started to cry. She was standing there with the phone in her hand. Her brain was fighting the reality of the conversation. Her reason was saying no mother would do this…could do this but her heart knew that this conversation was real, it really did happened and Melody just lost the only person in her life, no matter how annoying and distant she was. The only thing stable in her life. The realization of this was reaching her entire body with her blood.

With the lunch brake bell rang, a noise like thunder reached her. The voice of thousands of feet running to the dining hall swung the chandelier above her. Melody who was indistinctly aware of this noise slowly put the phone down. Her eyes, wet and stunned, scanned the room. As if she was trying to be sure no one saw the shame and embarrassment she is feeling. When she determined that she was alone she felt lonelier than she ever did. Warm and fresh tears joined the old ones blurring her sight. No one was going to console her. No one had ever done. She was all alone. She let herself fall on the floor slowly and hugged her knees with her arms. While the sobs she was trying to keep quite shivered her body she thought she was never really close with her mother. She couldn’t understand why she was hurt and sad this much about her mother leaving her just like that. She never had her. She never called her the way she called her dad…she couldn’t…her mother hadn’t let her.

If her mother was never a part of her life, if really long time had passed since she had lost her, then why…why she was feeling that her life had just changed forever?

Episode II

A Dream, A Nightmare and A Mystery

November which darkened her life passed lazily darkening her days too. Then left this mission to December which seemed more pretentious and ambitious than itself.

It had been three weeks since she was thrown over by her own mother. She should have been in Los Angeles already because Melody had a text message to her cell phone telling her that, there was a certain increase in her bank account. She wasn’t allowed to use it until she was eighteen but she had learned the amount of the money. It was seven hundred and forty five thousand American Dollars. Their house was more valuable than she thought apparently.

Her school life wasn’t going wonderful too. Besides her grades everything else was going down. She had no friends. Not after her best and probably only friend Denise left the school in her second year. But she had enemies. Maybe the worst enemy she could have in the whole school. Sera Toprak. Sera had always hated her in an obvious way. She was the most popular and beautiful girl in the school. Her blond, thin and straight hair was down at her waist, oscillating lazily with the smallest breeze, shinning like there was sun on top of her all the time. Her dark blue eyes were the most beautiful eyes Melody had ever seen in her life but when those eyes were focused on her they were turning icy cold, hard as marble.

Melody never understood this. She was quiet, never bugging anyone, doing her own work. Wouldn’t even care about Sera. But somehow when she didn’t care about anyone she labeled as ‘geeks’ or ‘weirdoes’ on the contrary, she was really annoyed by Melody. Annoyed so much Melody was the person she hated the most in the entire world.

Sera had tried to turn her life into a hell many times. Thinking and finding the most annoying names to call her, making plans to embarrass her, trying to crate an environment for her so Melody can’t trust anyone, can’t go and open up to anyone. So she could stay lonely until she finally graduates. She had spoken to every single person who ever wanted to have a word with Melody. They never came near her again. She made her fall more than once in front of everyone. And two days ago she caused her to be caught with illegal drugs which Melody didn’t even know how they ended up being in her bag. She wasn’t punished because not a single teacher in the school believed Melody would do that. Sera was punished though. For framing a ‘friend’ like this. Melody’s favorite teacher in the school, actually the only one she loved, Mrs. Nazan Seri, was really pissed off at her. She was the Head Assistant of the Principal and also the Head of Dormitories of the Girls. But more than that she was the only person who could see Melody. Melody loved her and always thought she loved Melody too. Mrs. Seri punished Sera with cleaning the ladies bathroom for an entire month all by herself and if she refuses to she would be expelled.

What she wasn’t expecting was Sera’s reaction to the punishment. After the decision of the Board of Discipline her hatred for Melody had been doubled, if it was possible... She was so angry at Melody, blaming her for her dirty job. Even though Melody knew her well, she didn’t see what was coming towards her. Another surprise from December. She was just unaware and not alerted for anything. Actually right now, she was sleeping.

Melody was having a dream. The moonlight coming in from the high, rock windows was shinning on her face. Making her look pale but also beautiful. She turned on her left avoiding the light. Her dream was still going.

She was wearing a long, burgundy colored dress and a golden belt on her waist. Her hair longer than they normally are was all the way down to her hips. Melody was flying. As free as a bird. She was gliding over the seas and mountains like a light breeze. Like this was the purpose of her life, like this was the reason why she was born. As she was flying over a sea watching the sea sparkles created by the moon, she suddenly felt like she was in a tunnel in mid-air. The world around her started to change. Like she was stable and everything else around her were moving. The moon and the sea disappeared, she found herself in a tunnel kind of a thing bending and shaping as maelstroms going as far as Melody could see. She remembered seeing a movie named “Contact” once, the tunnel she was in was pretty much like it…A wormhole?? Before Melody had a chance to think about it shapes appeared again around her. The first thing she could see was the ocean of trees under her. Then she saw a house right at the edge of the forest. A big house. A mansion maybe. She sprang forward with an expanding feeling of excitement and enthusiasm. She flew to the house cutting the air like a sword. She saw double doors and landed lightly on the stairs in front of them. Before her dress found a chance to fall down gracefully to her feet she rushed to the door, climbed the stairs. Six steps total. She stood in front of the door; her height was barely covering the half of the height of the door. There were blue flames painted in the middle of the each wing. She raised her hand feeling the excitement again. Like she was visiting someone she hasn’t seen for a while. Someone she missed so much. Like she was away from home for a while and came back two days earlier than she should. Knowing she would surprise everyone. She knocked the door bursting with joy. Three times.

Knock, Knock, Knock…

Knock, Knock, Knock….

Melody tried not to wake up. Held on to her dream tightly but the double door with burning blue flames was already drifting away. She tried to go back when Ms. Aslı’s –the lady which comes to wake them up- voice infiltrated her dream. She wanted to go through that door. She wanted to go home. She wanted it so much she actually managed to catch a glimpse of the door being opened for a single second but at that moment Ms. Aslı’s hands jogged her lightly and Melody woke up. She felt sad and angry. She felt like she missed a chance of a life time. She was mad at Ms. Aslı for waking her up even though she knew she was innocent. Melody always woke up before she came to wake up everyone. She always had her shower before everyone else, went to the dining hall before everyone else. Before two thousand and something student fill the place and eat up all the food there is. After that she was waiting for her lessons, either at the yard walking around or in the library reading. That day, she somehow slept half an hour more than usual. This had never happened to her before. She took an impressively quick shower cursing Ms. Aslı for waking her and herself for not waking. She got dressed and arranged her books. All took ten minutes. When she was running to make it to the breakfast she was already late; she banged with Sera Toprak hardly and dropped all of her books.

Sera, pulling herself together instantly, “Watch where you are going you rat” she said. She wasn’t alone two of her girl friends and one boy was with her. They cheered Sera for the new insult. She said, putting her hand on her waist, leaning her head to one side, “What happened? You are late, I think. Don’t you go to breakfast before everyone all the time, like they are all infected or something?”

“It’s actually none of your business but you are so interested in infected things I see why you care” she responded. Sera was beautiful but she wasn’t half smart as she was beautiful. When she stood there trying to understand what she said, Melody got a chance to collect her books. She didn’t want to fight with her. As she turned back to go, Sera grabbed her by the arm. She pulled her so quickly and harshly, casting her to the lockers. All of her books flung away from her arms one more time. She hit her back to the metal corner of the lockers and she felt anger flaming her blood. Yet she said calmly, “Let me go, Sera.”

“Oh, no,” she answered. “You have to pay for making me cleaning toilets first”

“It isn’t me who made you clean up toilets Sera! It’s you!” Melody felt anger filling her again. The warning tone in her voice, like a storm alert, was telling Sera to be careful.

Sera ignored it completely and nodded to the girls who were watching this with identical curves on the corner of their mouth. They instantly moved forward and grabbed Melody by the both arms, keeping her leaned against the lockers. When Sera was looking for something in her bag Melody felt fear infiltrated her anger but she was so mad she didn’t even care. She was trying to free her arms, kick Sera standing in front of her but she was a step ahead of her kick range. Sera showed her what was in her hand with an ugly smile; white, thinner and smaller than a pen. A cigarette. Melody forgot to fight, stunned. What was this now? Sera was planning to breath out cigarette smoke to her??

Sera settled the cigarette between her fingers still carrying the same impression and then elongated her hand to the boy next to her. He put his hand in his pocket and took a lighter out. As he lit Sera’s cigarette Melody felt a warning inside like a premonition and understand what was going to happen. One more time before she had a chance to be scared anger captured her. She wanted to kill Sera for even thinking to do this to her.

Sera approached Melody’s right arm. Feeling pleasure from what she was doing she said “Now let’s make you smoke a bit Melody.” Melody stared in her eyes; even though she knew what was going to happen, feeling no fear at all; she said “Don’t do this Sera Toprak. Don’t you do this” A feeling inside of her knew she was speaking not to protect herself but to protect Sera. As if Sera also felt it from the tone in her voice, she said “What can you do to me? Everyone is at breakfast and you are alone. You have to pay for what you did.” And before Melody got another chance to warn her she pressed the burning tip of the cigarette on her bare arm.

Melody screamed with pain and felt that something inside of her was released. A power burst in the middle of her chest to all over her body. And even flooded outside. Even though the pain searing her arm she felt the hands holding her were gone and heard Sera screaming. Her sight was blinded and a dire pain formed in her head erasing everything. As she tried to overpower the waves of this new inner burst out, she fell and lost consciousness.

still episode II,

The first thing that Melody felt when she woke up was the throbbing pain on her arm. She was lying on the floor facing the lockers, she had been held against. Melody sat up slowly and turned around. As she saw the scene in front of her, her blood drained away from her face. Her heart stopped for a while and as it started to beat again, the scene had reached her mind.

Sera Toprak was laying on the floor ten feet away, her skirt over her thigh leaving her upper legs totally bare. Her hair was all over her face and around her head on the floor. Her two girl accomplices were knocked out too. One of them on Melody’s right and the other on her left. Sera’s boy friend was a few feet away from Melody and he was waking up. As he saw Melody he stood up and ran away as fast as he can hitting classroom doors and falling three times…

Melody stood up quickly trying to understand what she was seeing. She stumbled through the bodies on the floor and started to run like someone was chasing after her. She didn’t stop until she reached the girls bathroom on the fifth floor. The only place in the school which belonged only to Melody.

There had been a fire on the fifth floor before Melody came to this school. The entire floor had burned and closed for studies. All the departments had been moved to a new building. No one was going to the fifth floor anymore and Melody had claimed the girls’ bathroom as her own hideout. She had cleaned it in a way that any other bathroom in the entire school had never been cleaner. She knew students didn’t know about her hideout and she thought teachers didn’t know either. But even if they did they wouldn’t be mad at her for cleaning and sitting in a bathroom on a closed floor.

She threw herself in the bathroom panting. She walked slowly to the mirror and looked in her eyes. Fear? Ohh, yes. Right there. Pain? Of course. Curiosity? Maybe. Worry? Definitely. If anything serious had happened to Sera and the others she would be in big trouble. She didn’t care a rat’s ass about Sera but the reason she was in this situation was Sera. And she really didn’t want to deal with problems caused by her.

She raised her arm, grimaced with the pain. She looked at the wound three fingers above her inner elbow. The point where the burning tip of the cigarette touched was black and burned. There was an awful smell coming from the wound. Outer part of the black spot had a dark red color which lightened with every inch away from the black spot. Her wound had swollen and there was a limpid liquid which covered the wound. She wasn’t able to touch her upper arm at all. Tears had basically gushed out of her eyes when she first tried. Her wound was serious. She had to go to the infirmary. But even if she did what was she supposed to tell the nurse? They had to report all the accidents and injuries. She wondered if the nurse would believe her if she said that she burned her arm with curling irons she used for her hair? She might have. Melody had to go to the infirmary no matter what. She would be in a terrible situation if her wound festered.

Melody lift her head again to look at the mirror. She saw the question in her eyes she had been thinking since she woke up in the middle of that mess. What had happened? What had happened to Sera and her gang causing them end up being all over the floor? Was it about the feeling she felt right before she had lost conscious? As she thought about it her eyes seem to glow a little but she decided it was just reflection. She put her hand over her head. She wasn’t in pain now but she was almost sure the reason why she had fainted wasn’t because of her arm but the dire pain in her head. Melody searched for the answer in her eyes looking deep in. She asked herself truthfully; did she think she caused it all? Was she thinking what happened to Sera and her gang was her doing? She said yes to herself. And felt surprised with her answer but also an immediate feeling of relief and certainty came over her. Besides thinking she was the reason for it, she knew she was. But she had another question which she didn’t have an answer for; how did she manage to do it?

She had always imagined having special powers when she was a little kid. Her favorite anime was Sailor Moon. Her interest in this subject had never faded away. She read Dean R. Koontz; had been going to movies about this. She sometimes had spent hours in front of a fire match trying to move it with her mind. She was never able to but never lost her faith that somewhere, some people were able to do it. She hadn’t been trying for a long time but her interest in the subject was still intact. Hidden deep inside of her. Because people have always humiliated the ones who believed in such things. She was already humiliated enough, if they knew she was into all this her life would be a living hell.

‘So what?’ she thought. ‘Now I have a special power? What was it then? Power to throw people away with my mind?’ She saw herself laughing and surprised by it. She said outside loud staring at herself, “Melody Beloven, you are one, weird person” She thought her eyes were glowing again. More bluish, but again…it must had been a reflection….
