Children and 'psychic sense'

We are all born with the capacity to detect a spirit. It is only as we grow older that the stigma against embracing the unknown touches us, as do the distractions of the physical world. We close ourselves off as we grow older, creating limits to what we perceive as possible. We box ourselves into the rules that define an acceptable reality, not wishing to appear crazy, flaky, or dishonest. However, there is a seemingly magical age in which none of those things matter, and we do not question the unexplained because we take it all in without questioning.

My sister has two children with another one on the way. She also lives in a house that with a history of ghostly activity. She doesn’t like to talk about it because she herself is frightened of it, and because nothing has been overtly threatening, I believe she feels her fears are something others might ridicule. After all, our family are no strangers to the unexplained, and we have several sensitives in our little clan that could probably take their abilities on the road. In her case, I don’t think it’s the fear that no one will believe her as much as the fear of having anyone tell her that it’s nothing to be afraid of.

Her first child was born with a caul over his face. Whether or not that is an indicator of strong psychic ability is not something I am going to get into, other than to say that as he’s grown older (he’s almost three at the time of this writing), he has been most affected by the goings on in her house. He and his little sister, born ten months later (yeah, I know, my sister is a machine), have been tickled by unseen hands, have told of speaking to a man, and have been awakened in the night by someone wanting to play with them. Now that they are talking more coherently, they are relating these experiences to my sister, as well as my mother, who lives next door.

Despite my sister’s fears, I feel she is handling the situation in the best way a person can, and this is what I am here to share. If your child sees something, talks to something, or otherwise interacts with something that shouldn’t really be there and is clearly not an imaginary friend, nurture the openness. Telling a child that it cannot possibly be there confuses them and encourages them to be dishonest. As they get older, you may want to tell them that talking to people outside the family about it is probably not the best idea, but try to do so without making them feel as though it is something to be ashamed of.

If a child has a strong psychic sense, closing them off to it is a huge disservice. Why not nurture the open mind and the insight? They may lose some of that anyway as they grow older, but to encourage closing them off from something potentially beautiful and creating fear, in my opinion, is not the way to go. Even and especially if what they see frightens them, get them to talk about it, reassure them, and allow them to one day appreciate their ability.

I believe that we are all born with a stronger ability to “see” that has the potential to get lost as we grow older. Why encourage a child to lose such an important gift that in later years, might provide vast insight and enlightenment?

Forthcoming Apocalypse

The eight horsemen of 2012

"The Mayans were an intelligent civilization that had advanced writing, knew mathematics and were well versed in astronomy."
Most people think that perhaps the world will end in 2012, because this is the prophesy of the Mayans. The Mayans made this prediction 2000 years ago and the dire date of doom is December 21, 2012. Why is 2012 so significant? Should we be worried? Should we even care? Let's take the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and see what imminent threats lie ahead. Then let's add a few more horsemen. Let's really get this party started! After we are all done, let's add everything up and see if we truly have something dark in the forecast.

Horseman known as War: In the bible it's mentioned in Matthew 24:6..."you will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars...." The threat of war is around us. We know of the war in Iraq. There is still a lot of unrest in the Middle East. Russia is starting to give us the cold shoulder again. Russia supports a nuclear program for Iran. Iran doesn't like Israel and it goes on and on and on. What if Iran declares to have nuclear capabilities. Our intelligence agents learn that they are planning to do a preemptive strike on their enemy Israel. Then America would step in, we most likely would lay out a preemptive strike first on Iran and somewhere Magog aka Russia would make their move. We must remember that in Ezekiel 38 through 39 tells of a future invasion of Israel by a vast coalition of nations that surround it. Laying down the foundation for Armageddon. So as you can see the threat of war will always be with us.

Horseman known as Famine: Not a problem, with global warming on the horizon, we should easily have all sort of droughts throughout the world. Drought equals mass starvation. There is chunk of ice the size of Connecticut breaking off from Antarctica. What is next a chunk of ice, the size of Texas? Then a chunk of ice the size of Alaska? That should bring on some rising waters, destroy a few cities. Everyone listen up to Al Gore. We are headed for disaster! The way global warming is headed, we will be seeing rising sea levels, glacial retreats, a shrunken Arctic, some extreme weather conditions, more forest fires, powerful hurricanes and tropical cyclones, agriculture disasters. When 2012 gets here, it should be getting worse. Does anyone see it getting better? I think it's a bit too late. Okay Mayans, what else do you have for us?

Horseman known as Pestilence: This one is easy. The Brazilian rain forest is practically gone. We keep on cutting down the trees and god knows what diseases are hiding in that luscious forest, waiting to creep up on mankind. We already have AIDS, flesh eating bacteria, some kind of super bug. We should all prepare for some major diseases in our near future. Maybe around 2012. You got to love those Mayans! Bring on the plagues!

Horseman known as Death: If global warming really gets a good kick start, there should be a lot of drought hitting one of our biggest land masses...Africa. If wars and the threat of terrorism continues, we should see more of death. If diseases and plagues sweep around the world easily through mass air transportation, that should wipe out a majority of the human race. Yep, death should be all around us. It's already all around us.

Before we talk about some other Horsemen. Let's talk about a white buffalo calf. The Apache, Blackfoot, Caddo, Hidatsa, Commanche, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Cherokee, Chippewa, Mandan and the Sioux all believed in a prophesy that would lead us towards end times. This would happen when a white buffalo came upon our world. Meet Miracle, a pure white buffalo born on August 20, 1994 on the Heider Farm in Janesville, Wisconsin. Hmmm...let me see, 1994 is pretty close to 2012. Coincidence? Maybe there is something to this prophesy. I guess, we will have to wait and see.

New Horseman known as Solar Dragon: Researchers at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) make claim that we will be hit by the heaviest solar flare that even overshadows the historic Solar Max of 1958. With all of the technology that we use, such as cell phones, computers and everything else, this solar flare could black out the whole world in one foul sweep! This solar flare can hit us either in the year, 2010, 2011 or 2012! There we go again mentioning 2012. Yep, we have a definite storm coming, a solar storm! What disaster will this solar storm produce for mankind?

Since the Mayans knew astronomy so well, they were able to predict a fantastic alignment. Our galaxy has a center. In this center, in which billions of stars take millions of years to revolve around, is located in the thickest star cluster that is part of the milky way, as seen from Earth. On December 21, 2012, guess what happens? During the Winter Solstice, this center will align with our own sun. This alignment was seen as significant to the Mayans. Is this alignment as significant as the Star of Bethlehem was to the birth of Jesus?

Let's meet a few more Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

New Horseman Known as Axis. Yep, there is another threat on the horizon. A little bit of global cooling and perhaps the Earth will shift by a mere 33.5 degrees. That would cause some major damage. How many of us can survive an axis shift?
New Horseman Known as Quake: Sounds like a WWE wrestler, but this Horsemen will shake you up! The ring of fire around the Pacific rim is getting more and more active. Earthquakes are increasing and more are predicted around the year...yeah...you know...2012.

New Horsemen Known as Comet: Some people who dabble with the bible code, think that Earth will be impacted by a comet. This one I don't buy, now if they were talking about asteroid 99942 Apophis impacting us in 2029 or 2036, that one I could swallow. But, the way NASA recently shot down a satellite, we most like would be prepared for a threat from an engaging asteroid or comet...

...Perhaps a great disaster will unfold around the year 2012, but I also believe that if we face grave disasters, we somehow will overcome and a new world will be brought forth. A new age and perhaps during this new age, we will also learn that we are not alone in the universe.

Dad has close encounter with UFOs

27 August 2008

A RETIRED painter and decorator saw more than he bargained for when he stepped out of his flat for a cigarette - and spotted SIX UFOs flying in formation.

John Petros, 42, was celebrating his birthday with son Petros, 11, when he saw what he described as bright red craft appear in the night sky.

From his balcony in Rokesly Avenue, Crouch End, he says he saw the six ships form a cross over Archway for several minutes before disappearing.

He captured two grainy images on his camera phone, which appear to show red dots in the sky but could not get a better image in time.

He said: "I saw two of them coming up together. At first I thought they were planes, and they were going to crash because they were so close."

The craft swept in low from the east on Saturday, July 26, at 11.55pm before rising vertically and forming a cross shape, he said.

"I called my son," he said "He couldn't believe it. They all went straight up and into the clouds and disappeared. The last one stayed in the air for about a minute, and then went up and up and it disappeared."

Mr Petros is confident the lights were not fireworks or flares or planes.

He says it was the "first time" he had ever seen a UFO, adding: "I would love to take these [pictures] to NASA and they would either verify it or say someone is having a joke. I wish I could have got it on video. I know what I saw."

He insisted that although it was his birthday he had only been drinking tea and coffee and had not been drinking alcohol or taking drugs. He said: "There has got to be something out there."

Paul Southcott, 49, co-founder of the UFO Supernatural Study Group, said: "We would like to hear his thoughts about it. It does sound like a good sighting. This is the first I have heard of them doing a cross in the sky."

Mr Southcott, who lives near the Angel, Islington, added: "At that time of night people are either asleep or drunk or watching a DVD. I have seen some good stuff in the sky and have craved for someone to come forward about it." Police say they did not receive any calls about UFOs on that night.

Its official: cows point north
Wednesday, 27 August, 2008

Submitted by Waspie Dwarf: Cows automatically point to the north because they have their own in-built compasses aligning them with the Earth's magnetic field, scientists have discovered. Researchers discovered that cattle have a good sense of direction and tend to point in a northerly direction. It has long been observed that cows appear to have a talent for weather forecasting and are able to predict when rain is on the way, but until now their navigational abilities have been largely ignored. Their innate ability to find north is believed to be a relic from the days when their wild ancestors needed an accurate sense of direction to migrate across the plains of Africa, Asia and Europe. Dr Sabine Begall and colleagues from the University of Duisburg-Essen looked at thousands of images of cattle on Google Earth in Britain, Ireland, India and the USA. They also studied 3,000 deer in the Czech Republic. The deer tended to face north when resting or grazing. Although, in many cases, the images were not clear enough to determine which way the cattle were facing they were aligned on a north/south axis.

The scientists concluded that they were behaving in the same way as the deer. Huge variations in the wind direction and sunlight in the areas where the beasts were found meant that the scientists were able to rule out those factors as being responsible for the direction they were facing.

Woman grows metal wires from her body
Saturday, 30 August

It's currently big news in Indonesia. Metal wires about 10-20 cm long grow from a woman's body. Skeptics initially thought that is must be "self-inflicted". Doctors however, have other theories but have given up on providing any scientific or medical explanations. The woman had this problem for 17 years and currently being investigated by the Ministry of Health. Initial consultation with doctors and specialists found that the wires are also inside her body. At this stage, there were no current medical explanations or any case ever exist. Hence, there is but only one other possible consideration… Occult magic. Her name is Noorsyaidah. A 40 years old kindergarten teacher from Sangatta, East Kutai. Her first symptoms started manifestating in 1991. The metal wires grew out of her chest and her belly. There was no explanation then (or even now). During the first week wires kept falling off from her body and were gone. A month later, the wires grew back again and from that time onward the wires did not fall.

They kept growing, one of her sisters said that she tried to help by trimming the wires. Alas, whenever she trimmed the wires, the wire retreated as if it were hiding and then popped up in another part of Noorsyaidah’s body.

Will the Hadron Collider destroy the world ?
Saturday, 6 September, 2008

As Europe's CERN particle-physics center is counting down to the official startup of the Large Hadron Collider, a report reassuring the public that the world's largest atom-smasher won't destroy the world is getting a second wave of publicity. The report was prepared by CERN scientists and outside researchers and released in June, updating a 2003 safety study. Now the new study has been published by the peer-reviewed Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. CERN used the occasion to emphasize the mainstream view that the collider won't create globe-gobbling black holes or other types of doomsday phenomena that have put folks on edge. "The LHC will enable us to study in detail what nature is doing all around us," CERN Director Robert Aymar said in today's news release. "The LHC is safe, and any suggestion that it might present a risk is pure fiction." The report concludes that if the collider could create catastrophes, the much more powerful particle collisions that continually occur in space would have wiped us out long ago. "It points out that nature has already conducted the equivalent of about a hundred thousand LHC experimental programs on Earth - and the planet still exists," said Jos Engelen, CERN's chief scientific officer.

Critics of the collider weren't satisfied when the report first came out in June, and they're not likely to change their mind now that it's been formally published in the scientific literature. The hysteria over the LHC and black-hole boogeymen has been rising with the approach of next Wednesday's low-energy startup.

Dog appears as witness in murder trial
Sunday, 14 September, 2008

The animal is believed to have been with his 59-year-old owner when she was found hanging from the ceiling of her Paris flat. Police believe it was suicide but her family demanded a murder investigation. During a preliminary hearing the pet was led into the witness box by a vet to see how it reacted to a suspect. It is said to have "barked furiously". The aim was to decide if there was sufficient evidence to launch a full murder inquiry and a judge is yet to reach a decision.French judge Thomas Cassuto praising the animal for his "exemplary behaviour and invaluable assistance".The dog has been named after the timid cartoon crime-buster Scooby Doo, who continually solves crime mysteries with the help of four American teenagers. A spokesman for the Palais de Justice in Paris confirmed that the Nanterre case was the first time a dog had appeared as a witness in criminal proceedings in France.

He said he was "almost certain" it was also a world first. However, the French legal system does have a reputation for trials involving animals, most famously evoked in The Hour of the Pig, a murder-mystery film which depicted an idealistic Parisian lawyer defending a pig charged with murder.

The sun will eventually engulf Earth - maybe
Thursday, 11 September, 2008

The future looks bright—maybe too bright. The sun is slowly expanding and brightening, and over the next few billion years it will eventually desiccate Earth, leaving it hot, brown and uninhabitable. About 7.6 billion years from now, the sun will reach its maximum size as a red giant: its surface will extend beyond Earth’s orbit today by 20 percent and will shine 3,000 times brighter. In its final stage, the sun will collapse into a white dwarf. Although scientists agree on the sun’s future, they disagree about what will happen to Earth. Since 1924, when British mathematician James Jeans first considered Earth’s fate during the sun’s red giant phase, a bevy of scientists have reached oscillating conclusions. In some scenarios, our planet escapes vaporization; in the latest analyses, however, it does not. The answer is not straightforward, because although the sun will expand beyond Earth’s orbit, or one astronomical unit (AU), it will lose mass along the way. As a result, Earth should drift outward as the gravitational tug lessens over time. (At its maximum radius of 1.2 AU, the sun will have lost about one third of its mass, compared with its current heft.

In this way, Earth could escape solar envelopment. But other factors complicate the analysis. Drag on the planet from the sun’s outermost, tenuous layers will cause Earth to drift inward. Smaller forces from the other planets—all in turn reacting to the same reducing, expanding sun—are even more difficult to account for completely.

Odd-shaped UFO spotted over Wigan
Friday, 19 September, 2008

Another weird-looking UFO has been spotted in the skies above Wigan. The day before the Wigan Reporter printed details of a mysterious object seen hovering near junction 27 of the M6 in Shevington Moor last month, another UFO was spotted by a number of people in Ashton-in-Makerfield. John Jones, from Ashton, was not aware of the story in the Reporter when he made his sighting, but felt compelled to come forward when he read about it the very next morning. John takes up the story: "It was about 7.30pm on Friday night (August 29) and I was looking up at the sky when I saw it. "It was a slightly overcast evening and the clouds were grey when I saw six very dark objects in very close formation. "They were like rubber balls and they were very close together in a circle. "My son was with me and we both had a look through our binoculars. The objects were turning towards the Downhall Green area and were in sight for a good five minutes below the line of the clouds. "They were very slow-moving but it definitely wasn't balloons and after observing them for some time they just seemed to vanish from sight." The next morning John saw our report of the Shevington UFO and couldn't believe his eyes. "I showed some people the picture in the paper and said that I had seen something similar the night before," he added.

John thinks the strange object could have been an unmanned surveillance drone of some sort and is convinced it wasn't a plane or a helicopter. "It wasn't just myself and my son that saw the object – my son pointed it out to some of our neighbours as well and they agreed it was very strange. It didn't wobble at all, it just flew silently and slowly across the sky."

Rare upside-down rainbow spotted in the UK
Thursday, 18 September, 2008

It appeared in the sky for the briefest of moments. A dazzling arc of psychedelic colour reminiscent of the Cheshire Cat's grin in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. But this is no fantasy or trick of the light, it is known as a circumzenithal arc. Seen here shimmering in the sky over Cambridge in the afternoon sunshine, it is often mistaken for a rainbow hanging upside down. But unlike a rainbow, the sky has to be clear of rain and low level clouds for it to be seen. Relatively rare in Britain, the arc only appears when sunlight shines at a specific angle through a thin veil of wispy clouds at a height of around 20,000 to 25,000 feet. At this altitude the cirrus clouds are made of ice crystals, the size of grains of salt. Meteorologists say the clouds must be convex to the sun with the ice particles lined up together in the right direction to refract the light. This results in the sunlight bouncing off the ice crystals high in the atmosphere, sending the light rays back up and bending the sunlight like a glass prism into a spectrum of colour. Renowned astronomer and writer Dr Jacqueline Mitton was lucky enough to capture the optical phenomenon on camera near her home in Cambridge last Sunday. The 60-year-old who has a doctorate in astrophysics from Cambridge University said: 'I've never seen anything like it before - and I'm 60. 'The conditions have to be just right: you need the right sort of ice crystals and the sky has to be clear. 'It's quite surprising for this to occur somewhere like Cambridge, usually it is in places that are colder.

'We're not sure how big an area it was visible over, but it was certainly very impressive.' According to Dr Mitton, the colours in the rainbow were intensified by the position of the sun, which was at the optimum spot in the sky of 22 degrees. The vision was made even more dazzling by the presence of "sun dogs" - gleaming spots on a halo around the sun. Dr Mitton added: 'It was just an amazing combination of factors that happened at the right time.'

Millionnaire Flees Haunted Mansion
31 September, 2008

A millionaire businessman from Nottinghamshire has said ghosts forced him to flee his 52-room mansion. Clifton Hall was bought by Anwar Rashid for £3.6m in 2007, but he has now handed it back to the bank. Mr Rashid claimed that during the eight months the family lived there they were haunted by mysterious figures and found unexplained blood stains on bedclothes. He called in paranormal investigators and said he stopped paying the mortgage as a last resort. The 32-year-old, who is worth £25m, made his money through a chain of nursing homes and a hotel in Dubai, and owns 26 properties. He and his wife Nabila, 25, moved into Clifton Hall - which dates back to the Norman conquest - with their daughters, aged seven, five and three, and 18-month-old son. Mr Rashid said: "I fell for its beauty but behind the facade it is haunted... "The ghosts didn't want us to be there and we could not fight them because we couldn't see them." He said the paranormal experiences began on the day they moved in, ranging from tapping on the wall and unexplained voices to ghostly presences taking the forms of their children. Mr Rashid added: "When we found red blood spots on the baby's quilt, that was the day my wife said she'd had enough. We didn't even stay that night.

" Paranormal experts were unable to solve the problem. The family left in August 2007 and Mr Rashid, who now lives in Wollaton, stopped paying the mortgage in January. The Yorkshire Bank finally reclaimed the hall on Thursday. He said: "When people used to tell me about ghosts, I would never believe them and would say 'whatever'. "But I would have to tell any new owner that it was haunted having experienced it."

Train Victim's Cell Called Loved Ones After He Died
30 September, 2008

One local family whose loved one died in the Metrolink collision is still questioning something that happened that night. They got several phone calls from 49-year-old Chuck Peck after the crash. But they now know he died on impact.Peck's fiancee, Andrea Katz, told KTLA that the first call was to his son in Utah. "...and he said my dad just called me and I said, what did he say? Is he okay? Where is he? He didn't say anything, the phone rang and it said dad," Peck's fiance Andrea Katz told KTLA.As firefighters worked to rescue survivors, family members said Peck's cell phone kept calling his son, his brother, his stepmother, his sister and his fiancee. But when they answered all they heard was static. And when family members called back, the calls went straight to voice mail. In all, family members say they received about 35 calls from Peck's cell phone through the night. Nearly five hours after the crash at 9:08 p.m., Katz received a call."We were yelling in the phone, hang in there baby. We're gonna get you out. You're gonna be okay," Katz said. When the rescue efforts turned to recovery, there was another call, which prompted search crews to trace it. They realized it was coming from the first train so they went back in one last time. "And they were so excited they had this incredible adrenaline rush at thought that they could possibly go find another survivor... we gave her a description and they spent the next couple of hours looking for him and they did end up finding him and they said that he had died immediately on impact and there was no way he could have been calling us," Katz said.

The calls stopped at 3:28 a.m., about an hour before Peck's body was found.Katz said the phone calls helped the family get through the night."The intellectual side of my brain thinks gee, it was a computer malfunction and then the emotional side of my brain, it was just Chuck letting us know that he knew that we were scared for him and letting us have hope.

Giant Cyclones Seen on Saturn
Wednesday, 15 October, 2008

Scientists have discovered a giant cyclone swirling on Saturn's north pole, and observed a similar storm on the planet's south pole in detail 10 times greater than before, thanks to new images from NASA's Cassini spacecraft. The new images, taken in infrared light, reveal for the first time a massive cyclone churning at the north pole, similar to a gigantic storm on Saturn's south pole. "These are truly massive cyclones, hundreds of times stronger than the most giant hurricanes on Earth," said Kevin Baines, Cassini scientist on the visual and infrared mapping spectrometer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "Dozens of puffy, convectively formed cumulus clouds swirl around both poles, betraying the presence of giant thunderstorms lurking beneath. Thunderstorms are the likely engine for these giant weather systems." Researchers think the storms are powered by heat released from condensing water in thunderstorms deep down in the atmosphere, similar to the way condensing water in clouds on Earth powers hurricane vortices. But unlike Earth's hurricanes, which stem from the ocean's heat and water, Saturn's cyclones have no body of water at their bases. The storms on that planet are locked to Saturn's poles, whereas terrestrial hurricanes drift across the ocean. Cassini mapped the entire north pole of Saturn in detail in infrared, with features as small as 120 kilometers (75 miles) visible in the images. Time-lapse movies of the clouds circling the north pole show the whirlpool-like cyclone there is rotating at 325 mph (530 kph) — more than twice as fast as the highest winds measured in cyclones on Earth.

Surrounding the cyclone is an odd, honeycomb-shaped hexagon, which itself does not seem to move while the clouds within it whip around at high speeds. Strangely, neither the fast-moving clouds inside the hexagon nor the cyclone seem to disrupt the six-sided feature. Southern storm The cyclone on Saturn's south pole has been observed before, but never in as much detail.

Argentinian 'Gnome' Back On The Prowl
Saturday, 18 October, 2008

A new sighting of South America’s ‘creepy gnome’ has caused panic among locals after a group of youngsters claimed a ‘midget monster’ ran towards them at night. The teens – who recorded footage of the freaky being on their mobile phone – said they are now “too terrified” to go out at night. Experts who examined the latest footage, taken in the town of Clodomira, province of Santiago del Estero, Argentina, last week, say it is ‘credible’. But sceptics say the sidestepping ‘gnome’ could be a speedy child or even a small animal. Last week’s footage was taken by Juan Carlos Roldan, his brother Javier and five friends, who were larking around by the water fountain in Clodomira. Juan, who filmed the creature, referred to it as “something that looked like a dwarf”. He said: “It was walking sideways and was wearing dark clothes. But it was impossible to see its face because its face was covered in shadows.” One of the lads, who were aged 15-22, yesterday told Argentinean reporters: “We were messing about - singing and dancing - when we heard a loud rustling noise from behind us. “This tiny thing started running down Avenue San Martin at us. It had a pointy head and dark clothes. “It was a person of incredibly low stature. We filmed it then got scared and ran off. “This little thing was barking like a dog - but running sideways on two legs. It headed off towards the football stadium.

” Juan added: “We stopped for a while around a block away from where we saw it. Then we returned and picked up the pieces of clothing that we had left behind and our bikes too but we didn’t see anything else.” Photographic expert Aldegonda Alvarz, of Universidad Nacional de Santiago del Estero, yesterday said: “This video footage seems credible. We could be looking at another ‘petido orejudo’ - small being.”

Army Developing "Synthetic Telepathy"[/b]
Friday, 17 October, 2008

Vocal cords were overrated anyway. A new Army grant aims to create email or voice mail and send it by thought alone. No need to type an e-mail, dial a phone or even speak a word.Known as synthetic telepathy, the technology is based on reading electrical activity in the brain using an electroencephalograph, or EEG. Similar technology is being marketed as a way to control video games by thought."I think that this will eventually become just another way of communicating," said Mike D'Zmura, from the University of California, Irvine and the lead scientist on the project."It will take a lot of research, and a lot of time, but there are also a lot of commercial applications, not just military applications," he said. The idea of communicating by thought alone is not a new one. In the 1960s, a researcher strapped an EEG to his head and, with some training, could stop and start his brain's alpha waves to compose Morse code messages. The Army grant to researchers at University of California, Irvine, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Maryland has two objectives. The first is to compose a message using, as D'Zmura puts it, "that little voice in your head."The second part is to send that message to a particular individual or object (like a radio), also just with the power of thought. Once the message reaches the recipient, it could be read as text or as a voice mail. While the money may come from the Army and its first use could be for covert operations, D'Zmura thinks that thought-based communication will find more use in the civilian realm."The eventual application I see is for students sitting in the back of the lecture hall not paying attention because they are texting," said D'Zmura.

"Instead, students could be back there, just thinking to each other."EEG-based gaming devices are large and fairly conspicuous, but D'Zmura thinks that eventually they could be incorporated into a baseball hat or a hood. Another use for such a system is for patients with Lou Gehrig's disease, or ALS. As the disease progresses, patients have fully functional brains but slowly lose control over their muscles.
