The Olympics
Posted 8/25/08
Are we really all that stupid that we take such pride in these events, make such a big deal about them, and then worship people for it?

A guy runs really fast, big deal.

Now lets factor in the Olympics.

A guy runs really fast in the Olympics, HE IS HIS COUNTRY'S HERO, WOW! Lets give him a medal some money and stick him in newspapers, on the television, and much more!

Also one of the points of the Olympics are supposed to be showing unity or whatever, which is why we are all so competitive and insulting during them.

Honestly, I don't care about the Olympics, I don't mean get rid of them, I'm just saying, why is it such a big deal? The only thing the Olympics have done for us really is

1. Show black people were not physically inferior to white people (guess thats pretty done, even though it was done in other places to.)

2. Give the Soviets and Americans one more then to fight over.

3. Give Tibetan protesters targets.

well, I don't know about you... but this event is used for those who tried so hard in honing their skills. They are to be respected.

Yes I agree. The Olympics is an event where an athlete can compete in a sport which they've invested great labor into and be rewarded for their efforts.

But the amount of respect and attention time and money we put into this is blown out of proportion. PLENTY of people do all sorts of things to do things, but should we really make THIS BIG of a deal about it. And honestly, Ping Pong? C'MON.

hahaha, guess you never played ping pong. It takes hella skill to play that one. How you strengthen your spin, how you accurately read other's spin, how you maintain your composure-not panicking, your reflex, stamina, etc.

Your looking to much into it. ANYTHING at its root can be super complicated. Like we can take a simple DS game like Advance Wars. This game makes Chess look like a joke if you go into its core. In chess, you get a certain amount of piece's that can do its function and move to certain squares. In Advance wars, the amount of piece's always changes and sometimes can be produced, therefore bringing money into your calculation. Different terrain have different effects of the percentage that your units will take. All the maps are different, and can call for different units at different times. Units can do different things then there original functions if used properly. You must also worry about capturing city's to keep your funds up and enemy;s funds down. There are Air Units, Ground Units, and Naval Units. Different Units can attack Different units. Some are only ground to ground, some are ground to sea, some are ground to air, Air to Naval, Air to ground, Air to Air, Naval to Air, Naval to ground, and Naval to Naval. Some units can attack ranged, and some can only attack direct. There can also be fog of war, in which you would have to worry about concealed enemy positions, how much of your position is exposed to enemy's, and if a move is going to be blocked by a unseen enemy, can your unit handle it? Also, different weather has effects on your units movement, and gas consumption, because yes, things run on gas in this game and you have to keep refueling them in mind constantly.

There still more, but yeah, this is a child's game mind you. Even the game POKEMON is deep at its core, or Tick-Tack-Toe, a simple game like Rock Paper Scissors, if more then 2 rounds, is a game of trying to understand your opponents thought process to determine there move. EVERYTHING at its core is complicated if we choose to make it that way.

Let me give you the answer : popularity.
Guess pokemon and advanced wars aren't that great to survive hundreds of years. LOL. (we'll see if we actually see them survive, when we are old)

well, even with your argument, I still give high appreciation to those in olympics. I don't mind them having good life after spending their whole life honing their skills.

As an ex-avid player of Pokemon, this is all I have to say.

If I wasn't a programmer I would be impressed. All things, such as the rate of catching something, use algorithms and equations. It's impossible to tell a computer "If the Pokemon is kinda weak, let him catch it." You would have to make some kind of formula, but sense things like sleep factor into weither you catch it or not, the equation is going to get more complicated. In truth, a TON of games you play use things like that, because you have to program it that way.

aww hell, here it comes, one hell of a rant

[/rant]
first of all, it is a huge deal if someone can run really fast. it means that they are better at everyone in the world, and that all the dedication and training that they comitted to their sport paid off. if they break a world record, that means that they are the best at their sport ever. it is amazing to see these people perform, because most people in the world couldn't even come close to their degree of skill. and even if they don't win, you have to respect the amount of dedication they have. people train for years to be able to compete, and depending on the sport, their careers may only live through one olympiad. i don't see how you don't think its a big deal when someone wins a gold medal, or breaks a world record. it means that they, out of the best competitors from almost every country in the world, are the best. to me, that demands a great deal of respect.

i also greatly admire the so called theme of the olympics, that of international unity, competition, and hospitality, but it gets way too political. all the B.S. about china's human rights record, fair business practices, and all that crap is not what the olympics are about. the olympics is supposed to be a time when we look past all the terrible things we do to eachother under normal circumstances, and come together as men to compete in sports as a show of goodwill, instead of bringing all the negative aspects of the host country to focus. in ancient greece, everything stopped for the olympic games. it doesn't matter what is going on in the world, the olympics was a time when men of every country forgot their political rivalries and competed with eachother in sports, showing that no matter what goes on in the world, all men are still human, and can find common ground with even their most bitter foes. it seems to me that the modern Olympic Commission, the modern world, has forgotten that core philosophy.

i propose greece just renovate the fuck out of the city Olympia, and we just host the Olympics there every 4 years, instead of switching around the host nations. it would be way more traditional, the name of the games would actually make sense, and it would allow us to focus our attention to the same place every 4 years, instead of switching around the host nations, and finding problems with each country to nitpick at.

Ironically you just made the argument ten times more complicated. Congratulations!

I can take a crap faster then EVERYBODY in the world, should people care? A guy can run faster in the world, why way more impressive then my crap, even I will admit, ultimately, all he did was run fast. Yes, he trained his whole life to do it, but its still just running fast. By your logic, if I train all my life to crap the fastest in the world, I should be admired and respected. Now I got nothing against the runner, I mean, I seen some dudes do some INSANE jumps that I WISH I could do. But then that was it, it was there, now its gone. You guys are looking so much into these guys training there physical abilities and not realizing all there doing is TRAINING THERE PHYSICAL ABILITY'S. We make such a fuss over it. We suck at prioritizing things, have you ever noticed that you are more interested in American Idol then you are the Wars that are being fought around the world?

Athletes all the time are praised for there physical abilities, and paid HUGE sums of money. Then people worship these men and women like God. In truth, there not that special, they have done nothing more but prefect what they like to do. Many people do this, but we look at these kind of things with bias. "Hmm, what the hell, some guy wrote this book about life or something? Why should I care. Holy crap, this guy can jump higher then anybody in the world! DUDE, SOMEHOW THIS IS WAY MORE COOL AND INTERESTING AND DESERVING OF MY ATTENTION THEN THAT OTHER GUY!" It's the same shit, but a different person looking at it, and unfortunately a lot of people look at it a certain way, thus we get blown out of proportion events like the Olympics.

As I have said and you have said, the theme of the Olympics is not the theme of the Olympics. Regardless of what they SAY it is, it never is. Honestly, the Olympics for a long period of time have just been Soviets and Americans just proving where better then each other, and trying to come out on top on some imaginary war and ego trips. (See Cold War, and Space Race)
