first of all, it is a huge deal if someone can run really fast. it means that they are better at everyone in the world, and that all the dedication and training that they comitted to their sport paid off. if they break a world record, that means that they are the best at their sport ever. it is amazing to see these people perform, because most people in the world couldn't even come close to their degree of skill. and even if they don't win, you have to respect the amount of dedication they have. people train for years to be able to compete, and depending on the sport, their careers may only live through one olympiad. i don't see how you don't think its a big deal when someone wins a gold medal, or breaks a world record. it means that they, out of the best competitors from almost every country in the world, are the best. to me, that demands a great deal of respect.

i also greatly admire the so called theme of the olympics, that of international unity, competition, and hospitality, but it gets way too political. all the B.S. about china's human rights record, fair business practices, and all that crap is not what the olympics are about. the olympics is supposed to be a time when we look past all the terrible things we do to eachother under normal circumstances, and come together as men to compete in sports as a show of goodwill, instead of bringing all the negative aspects of the host country to focus. in ancient greece, everything stopped for the olympic games. it doesn't matter what is going on in the world, the olympics was a time when men of every country forgot their political rivalries and competed with eachother in sports, showing that no matter what goes on in the world, all men are still human, and can find common ground with even their most bitter foes. it seems to me that the modern Olympic Commission, the modern world, has forgotten that core philosophy.

i propose greece just renovate the fuck out of the city Olympia, and we just host the Olympics there every 4 years, instead of switching around the host nations. it would be way more traditional, the name of the games would actually make sense, and it would allow us to focus our attention to the same place every 4 years, instead of switching around the host nations, and finding problems with each country to nitpick at.

I can take a crap faster then EVERYBODY in the world, should people care? A guy can run faster in the world, why way more impressive then my crap, even I will admit, ultimately, all he did was run fast. Yes, he trained his whole life to do it, but its still just running fast. By your logic, if I train all my life to crap the fastest in the world, I should be admired and respected. Now I got nothing against the runner, I mean, I seen some dudes do some INSANE jumps that I WISH I could do. But then that was it, it was there, now its gone. You guys are looking so much into these guys training there physical abilities and not realizing all there doing is TRAINING THERE PHYSICAL ABILITY'S. We make such a fuss over it. We suck at prioritizing things, have you ever noticed that you are more interested in American Idol then you are the Wars that are being fought around the world?

Athletes all the time are praised for there physical abilities, and paid HUGE sums of money. Then people worship these men and women like God. In truth, there not that special, they have done nothing more but prefect what they like to do. Many people do this, but we look at these kind of things with bias. "Hmm, what the hell, some guy wrote this book about life or something? Why should I care. Holy crap, this guy can jump higher then anybody in the world! DUDE, SOMEHOW THIS IS WAY MORE COOL AND INTERESTING AND DESERVING OF MY ATTENTION THEN THAT OTHER GUY!" It's the same shit, but a different person looking at it, and unfortunately a lot of people look at it a certain way, thus we get blown out of proportion events like the Olympics.

As I have said and you have said, the theme of the Olympics is not the theme of the Olympics. Regardless of what they SAY it is, it never is. Honestly, the Olympics for a long period of time have just been Soviets and Americans just proving where better then each other, and trying to come out on top on some imaginary war and ego trips. (See Cold War, and Space Race)

The problem is... a lot of people care. So even if you don't care, they also don't care about you

sad.

I just respect the anthropological reason why people do something. Passion.

*sigh*

Might as well take a serious stab at this topic.

I'll start off with saying that the host countries of the olympics do benefit quite a bit from the olympics. Economically speaking I mean...Hmm...I'm pretty sure I can find a page on it pretty quickly...There we go.

http://www.selig.uga.edu/forecast/olympics/OLYMTEXT.HTM

Furthermore if you're seriously going to go with your "the Olympic atheletes are not worthy of their praise" argument...You might as well attack every single outlet of entertainment that exists. Ever. As they do cost money, and definitely to not hold the same amount of importance as the Olympics do.

Here I go!

Every single person in a form of ENTERTAINMENT does not deserve to be treated like they have found a solution to world hunger.

Name every country that has hosted the Olympics, and then point out why they needed a Economic Boost. I'm sure China has seen a economic boost, I'm also sure without it China would still be one of the richest country's in the world.

Eh, well yeah the country itself does benefit it, but a lot of uh...regular people, who own businesses and such, also benefit from it as well. I mean, the Olympics just gives an all around economic boost to the area, which is always a good thing, right?

And, the Olympic athletes, save the big names such as Phelps and Kobe for example, get their (literally) 15 minutes of fame. They really hardly get any adoration. I mean, we all know Phelps, Shawn Johnson, Nastia...Less know others like Bryan Clay and Torres. Then there's that archery dude that probably no one knows and will fade away until the next Olympics, if he's still young enough...>_>...Even then, the many of the well known names will fade away from our minds in a week or two. Of course that is in America. The athletes do get more recognition in smaller countries. Though, I'm not qutie sure how well they are treated.

And to add on a completely different note.

It's later than I thought it was...Dammit...>_>...

I think some of the people here are getting the wrong idea. It's not about race. It's not about America getting more medals than Tunisia. It's that it is the only real event that exists where everyone in the world can come together. So, while Russia is occupying Jordan and the States are invading Iraq, the athletes of the world are competing together, not bombing one another.

Think about it. The Chinese are all big on not disgracing what ever they honor and it just so happens when the Olympics come around, there in first place.

That could have to do with the fact they focused on ONLY the events they knew they could take, which there happened to be more of then the ones they knew even if they tried they would lulz fail.

IE Go Ping Pong, screw Basketball.
