I've come across hate memes that wanked Singaporeans for their Singlish. To quote a non-Singaporean lj user,

"I hate how being in _ fandom has made me hate each and every person from Singapore -- even before I've met them -- simply on the basis that they are from Singapore and therefore, clearly, destined to be retarded."

And the mixed response Singaporeans gave which shows the confusion over this issue.

"Right. I'm Singaporean, and sometimes I wish to hell I wasn't because people like you are just going to group me together with the thousand and one other fantards. You heard it. I'm embarrassed of my fellow Singaporeans yet still proud to be one. Don't bother pointing and laughing at me, I'm not here to kick up a fuss anyway, just voicing my thoughts."

"Not all Singaporeans speak Singlish as well, and I'm not even proud to say that; because seriously, Singlish is a total embarrassment to other Singaporeans who don't speak Singlish."

Perhaps this is the best response but is this true for all?

"It is simply a Singaporean's choice to speak in English or Singlish. Most of us are pretty flexible in switching from one to another."

We should learn to differentiate between singlish and english... I am proud of singlish, having an distorted language is a kind of local culture, i dont find anything to be embarrass about... it improves bonding between fellow countrymen... well, most countrymen... what is the non singaporean trying to say anyway? singlish is retarded? and is the singaporean is trying to say that he is 1 level higher than us?

And why is speaking singlish consider a fantard? those singaporean with an american or british accent seems more of a fantard to me...

who is that spastic obonoxious moronic retarded gothnic satanic imbecile redundant barbaric @#$% personified? he should be reflecting on himself that why us can't speak our own lang when he slank like nobody business..la leh lor le leh oi get a life dude..whoever whatever that was..a organic plankton bullshit filthy airscum..if he got such a big problem with singaporeans talking or writing/typing in singlish, he could jolly well ignore them. why said something so agressive and offensive..and although singlish is creating 'retarded' impression, but that is the 'language' that link each and every singaporeans. When you are overseas and asians are everywhere..the way that you could recognise a singaporean is the way he or she speak and hence it is not as 'retarded' as what you claimed it to be. so you prolly is the biggest faggot i've ever known to state something so unnecessary. so let's condemn him to the very abyssal of hell to be engulfed by the infernal flames..so tell me who is that denatured brainless communist?

those gan dangs out there expressing their hate for singlish are so pathetic. trying to be something they're not. hello! wake up! u tink tat makes u cool meh? ang moh wannabes.
singlish is part of our culture and heritage! we should embrace it! its part of our identity which sets us apart from the rest of the world.
of coz la, muz be flexible. if writing business letters or taking exams in sch, u write singlish, then u're asking for it la.

Singlish is for Singaporeans usage only so.....
anyway we are borned into this culture

i dun feel pride or hate towards singlish just think of it as an extra tool to use which living in Singapore has given to me.

LOL it doesn't really matter.
But of course, if we can all converse in proper english, it will be better hmmm.

Singlish is unique to Singapore, so why shouldn't we be proud of it? It reflects our diversity, and how the different cultures here can blend to form something. More importantly, it is something Singaporeans can identify with Singapore. You can almost say, to speak Singlish is to be Singaporean. I mean, you don't hear ANY foreigners speaking it, right? haha...
And, just to set the record straight, Singlish doesn't equal broken English. Singlish is, and i quote from santhor, your "la leh lor le leh oi" and all the stuff you find on talkingcock.com. It's not broken English, it's like a form of colloquialism or something.
And, one more point of contention, why speak Chinese more? Are we gonna alienate the other groups that don't speak Chinese?

lol... okayyy.... the problem with putting too much emphasis on mother tongues is that it could divide... and we need our racial harmony and all here... XD
