I think that most of them have awesome character designs. The only thing that annoys me is the little to no background that you see. What you mostly ever see is just a blank background, or in some cases you will see flowers or any other random designs. I think that having a background in one's manga gives it more of a sense of realism. For an example of an awesome shoujo manga that has little to no background design, try Gakuen Alice.

Some are good and some are bad. It depends on the artist.

Just like with any genre, it depends on the artist.
Having said that, it seems true that Shoujo artists do trend the overly decorated aesthetic.
Just now I tried to check out a random not that famous manga (at least I never had heard of it before) recommended to me by one of my best friends and the difference of style struck me immediately. Just look at this page
Yeah, the feminine details is not appealing to me. If anything, it's turning off male audiences with flower backgrounds and puffy text balloons.
Besides, it seems in Shoujo artists dont' worry about proportion much because their storytelling has less action and more talks.
However, you can't say their art is bad just because it's different or focuses on other things. If you notice, backgrounds, faces, and clothing are far superior in details in most cases when it comes to Shoujo.
I won't care much about drawing styles if the manga itself has a good story or it makes me laugh a lot. This is true for any genre.
Personally, I myself have taken influence from some of their styles. The way I draw noses and eyebrows are basically the same as in Fruits Basket.
I do love a few Shoujo anime and manga, like CCS, Fruits Basket, Kare Kano, Fushigi Yugi, Red River, Kimi ni Todoke, Guru Guru Pon-chan... though I haven't finished the last three. And when it comes to anime, Princess Tutu!!!

It depends on the artist and the style you yourself like to read.

I find that shojo is actually one of the better-drawn ones compared to other manga genres. Women primarily write and draw these, and thus reflects an idealized vision on what physical beauty and romantic relationships should be. Sure, the beauty of the actual art is dependent on the viewer and the year the series was first serialized. They are trends in manga art, and I'm not talking about just the characters' fashion sense.Try getting an older work of say, Miki Aihara (Tokyo Shonen Shojo) and compare it with her current serialization (From 5-9). It's the same manga-ka but the art is a stark as night and day. Lines are more modern and the features are more delicately drawn in From 5-9 as compared to the cartoonish feel of Tokyo Shonen Shojo. No, it's not just the evolution of her style or not that she "just got better". Compare her work with other manga serialized around the same year and you'd see the art is very similar as well

well just like shounen it depends on the shoujo. There's badly drawn shounen, badly drawn shoujo, nicely drawn shounen, and nicely drawn shoujo.

in my experience though the best-drawn shoujos have the dullest storylines T_T. So I don't read a lot of pretty shoujos lol.

I don't think all are drawn badly. Some are drawn great and some not so much. Some are a bit too... "bubbly" and girly girl drawn for my taste, but that's just my opinion :p

Yes.

I think that it's because most shoujou artists tend to be very detailed about the aesthetics of each and every character. From the jaw line to socks, they incorporate that stuff and it looks great.. at profile views or at character art. It looks weird to me when it's in the panels only because I don't think that that much detail translates well when they're in motion or emoting.

That might just be me though. lol

I don't really think they are badly drawn but, I do think some of them have a boring story line.
It all depends on the manga.

well some of them are okay. but i really hate it when their eyes cover more than half of their face and then their nose and mouth are the size of a freakin' grain of rice.

Agree, I don't mind a love story well written, but I cannot look at this stereotypical style without my eyes burning. Sometimes I feel that they should just have the printers use sparkly paper to finish the touch :s The triangle extra large eyed style with no features, I cannot help but think of the traditional grey skin aliens...

I find some of them to look better than many Shounen manga and many others I find horrible. But same goes for any other genre, every artist's work has a different feeling to it, plus what's good and bad depends solely on the reader's taste.
