Is the Soul a Myth?
Posted 8/27/08 , edited 8/28/08
NOTE: I want to keep this thread as civilised as possible, so if you are not agreeing with someone's opinion, don't go all "you're wrong, you're an idiot for thinking something stupid like that.." etc. Try to stay civilised and rather ask them, why they think like that, or what made them think like that, etc... Which doesn't mean that I completely disallow "arguments" Basically as long as they don't turn out to be too insulting or flamerish I don't mind.
I.e. try to write and argue in an intelligible manner!
If I see anyone in here flame/insult someone, i.e. start a flame war, I am going to report that individual and make sure that he/she gets banned. So, be warned!

Questions and helpers to motivate your creativity when posting your opinion:

Now, what about your thoughts on this subject? Do you believe that the soul is a mere myth, or do you think that there is something more deep down inside of you? Perhaps your soul? Why do you think that the soul is a myth? Why do you think that the soul exists?

Your thoughts, please ^^

PS: Actually this is mainly about the fact why you think that souls exist or why not, so it's not really about the afterlife, but since those two subjects are tightly connected to each others, I guess it can't be completely avoided

EDIT: As I said, I want to hear your opinion, and not some lame statement like this:" We'll find out once we're dead." As this was not the point of this thread, this thread isn't based on facts, proofs, it's more based on your personal feelings, thoughts about this subject. Of course it is good if you have some facts that might support your opinion.
What I want to say is, that this should be more of a theoretical discussion, that's what philosophy is about..whether it's true or not, we will never have serious, or enough persuasive proofs for that matter.

Definitions:
1) The soul is a mental and invisible substance "standing beyond and under my mental properties as their possessor and unifier" which is aware of itself and its experiences and which makes me a conscious and living being

2) The immaterial essence, animating principle, or actuating cause of an individual life

3) The spiritual principle embodied in human beings, all rational and spiritual beings, or the universe

Etc...

Theoretical, explanation part:

Some people deny the existence of the soul, and their view is called " physicalism " because it upholds that we are purely and only physical beings. While " dualism " means that we are not merely physical beings, but in addition to our physical existence, we also have a non-physical aspect of our existence. Those so-called dualists are then differenced into various groups as they have a different view on the nature of the soul. I am only going to mention the two main views of the dualists on that subject: " property dualism " and " substance dualism ". What do this three theories represent?

Physicalism - The soul is a myth

- says that humans do not have souls, but are purely physical
- thinking, feelings, emotions are just mere physical events caused by our brain, central nervous system

Property dualism - The soul is a non-physical property of a physical substance

- property dualism, in short, says that the existence of our soul is dependant upon our body. For our soul is simply the collection of mental properties and events of the body. The implication of this is that there could not be life beyond death because when our bodies die, our souls must also die.

Substance dualism - The soul is a non-physical substance

- says that our soul is an independent mental entity in its own right, which means that our soul is able to exist even after our physical body has passed away, i.e. afterlife
- the soul and the brain can interact with each other, but they are different substances with different properties

_________________________________________________________________________________________

My stance on that subject:

I, for instance, am not sure whether to believe that our life would continue after death, as a soul. But I am sure that everybody has a "soul", whether they realise it or not. Why do I think so? Quite frankly, I doubt that everything that is happening within us is merely the product of physical events, i.e. brain functions, etc.
Of course, I won't deny that our soul is connected to our central nervous system, and I don't think that neither of them could exist without one another's help. While our central nervous system is something like the medium of our soul, it is reflecting the thoughts, emotions and feelings that are currently affecting our soul and mind. What I want to say with this, is that if we wouldn't have a physical body, even if there was a possibility that our soul would remain even after our physical death, our soul wouldn't be able to realise it's own existence, as it would lack the physical senses( scent, sight, etc) to feel itself. So after my logic we would be dead even if our soul is capable of living on without a physical body, as we wouldn't know that we still exist as the medium which made this possible is gone, unless we'll find another "medium" to do so.

I guess this is all a matter of belief. The possibility of my existence being a mere physical phenomena makes me sad, as this would mean that all of my thoughts, opinions, feelings, etc. were merely the product of my brain. Not that I wish to be immortal, no not at all, maybe I am just desperately hoping that all of my emotions and thoughts have something more profound to it, and are not solely based on some chemical reactions in my body. While I don't deny that our soul is dependant upon our body, as our physical condition is definitely influencing our mind, soul.

Of course there are no factual proofs which would support my "belief"/opinion, but meh, that's called philosophy

Conclusion: I would be a so-called property dualist

I believe in souls. I've read many times before of people whos body and mind completely stopped living, then came back to life 10 minutes later claiming, they had control over their soul and pressed on to bring back their soul into their body to live again. They also claimed to have seen their dead bodies from a third person since their soul was floating around.

Meh, I want your opinion, and not how we could make sure of it...everybody has an opinion on this subject, whether it's true or not, whether it's based on facts or not. That's what I want to hear, and not some lame answer, like: " We can only know once we're dead." As this was not the point of this thread.

Metaphysicalism would be a propable attestment to the querying definition of soul.

I'd like to beleive I have a soul. When I feel any deep emotion, I know my body responds, but something else does too. Just not in a way I can properly explain. I'll try . For example, I respond to sadness by crying, but there is something else deep down that's pulling at me. When I feel very distraught, I feel much more than tears. I know the brain gives signals, but this is more than just a scrape on the knee, or a paper cut I respond to stuff like that, but those are an example of little things. Like, when I compare loosing someone close to a papercut, I'd say thats where body and soul are seperated. Loosing someone I love would cause the body to react, but what about the untouchable feeling? Call me crazy, but I feel something else other than my heart racing and dizziness just hearing someone is hurt, or hearing about something awesome and nearly jumping for joy. I think it's more than the brain, or whatever, but thats just my opinion . I believe deep feelings prove I have a soul, well, if nothing else does. I haven't had a near death experience yet

Er, so my beleifs match "substance dualism" Or am I wrong >.< ?

Sorry I didn't read all of what you posted before. My attention span just isn't all that great

Uhm, well since you didn't make it really clear if you think that the soul will exist even after your physical body is dead, or if you think that the soul dies with the body? For the first option that would mean that your opinions, indeed, are matching with the substance dualism theory, and if you believe in the second option, then your beliefs match with the property dualism theory. ^^
