"mao-chan", "kame-kun", what does it usually mean? These are the most common honorifics used when you say someone's name: -san = Generally for any person you first meet. It means Mr./Ms./Mrs. (eg. "Keiji-san" would mean "Mr. Keiji" in english) -kun = Generally for any BOY that you may know. (eg. "Kame-kun" just plainly means you're saying a boy's name) -chan = Generally for any child/girl/close friend. It is insulting to use this when saying a boy's name you're not close to (eg. "Mao-chan" just plainly means you're saying a girl's name) If you call a guy you're not close to "-chan" he will be insulted-tan = Boy version of "-chan" only used if you're close to this person -sama = Generally for a person of higher status or higher ranking than you (eg. "Matsumoto-sama" just plainly means you're respectfully stating that this person is higher than you) -senpai = Generally for an upperclassman at school (eg. "Keiji-senpai" would literally mean "Upperclassman Keiji") -sensei = Generally for a person you're learning from or someone of high profession like teacher/doctor/lawyer (eg. "Matsumoto-sensei" would either mean "Dr. Matsumoto" or "Teacher Matsumoto" depending on what his/her profession is) many thanks sakura fan... and sakura means cherry blossom if i'm not mistaken..correct me if i'm wrong..**** Watashi wa means "I am" Watashi = I wa = grammatic particle when stating the previous word is the subject |
