I know how to read and write Nihongo. I know roughly 800 kanji but that still isn't enough to read a newspaper.

Self-studied.

My advice:
1. writing the characters (hiragana, katakana or kanji) helps you in memorizing
2. while writing the character, say it out loud
3. observe proper stroke order
4. build your kana syllabary one character at a time, then one row at a time
5. and when you've finished with a character or a row, don't leave it behind. when you're done with the a-set, try the ka-set, then write the a-set and ka-set together. later on you add the sa-set, and write a, ka, sa all together. repeat until you've built the entire kana.

what's nihongo? ~

Nihongo is "japanese language" in japanese.

oh right!!!.. oh yea now tht i think of iti knew that!! lol:P

No, it looks difficult anyway, I'm learning Korean though because I'm starting classes in January, and the teacher advised me to learn the alphabet before, as it will make the class easier, even though we are covering the alphabet in the class.

Why is this in the drama section anyway?

I was taught two lines of hiragana in fifth grade and that's pretty much all I know XD... I was in a class for gifted kids and every quarter we focused on a specific topic; in the last quarter of fifth grade we were supposed to learn Japanese and Latin. Unfortunately, we only got through the simple greeting phrases and the vowel and "k" lines of Hiragana when the school year ended LOL.

I've been thinking of taking it up since a lot of my relatives and friends want to go to Japan, and I will probably contribute to that... I figured might as well learn it, because both learning the language and visiting the country are two goals I've had for a long time.
