i have a shonen jump magazine with a gray-man chapter in it
and in one of the articles it says:
If one were to examine the colorful world which we live, this planet soaked in the rich, vibrant colors of nature and its whims, it would be plain to see that the divine palette out of which humankind was fashioned has but two colors: black and white, good and evil. And for most human beings, gray is the default setting.
so basically d is probably for default

 i dunno if my answer is rigth but this is what i've found out. D.gray-man is from Dorian Gray, possibly referenced in "Dorian Grey man" and thus "D.Gray-Man", The guy named Dorian Grey wished that his painting aged instead of him becuz he doesn't want to lose his beauty. His wish is fufilled and with each sins he does, there's a disfigurement of his form. He doesn't aged n the painting keeps getting worst with each sin.
The link to D.Gray-man is the soul that is tied to the Akuma. The more Akuma kills, the more it lv, the more ugly the soul become. Just like the painting. You can see that Allen couldn't even look at the Akuma lv 4 cuz it's too horrible.

Hey, did you realise that if you look at the front of the manga cover, "D.Gray-Man" ends up looking like "D.Crap-Man" ?
LOL.
I searched for D.Gray-Man on the internet once, and stuff like D.Gay-Man and D.Crap-Man came out ._.
