It indeed is falling...and um, head first. Music is continuously evolving, most of the kids of today consider my chemical romance, the used and the likes the gods of music. The sad thing is that they conclude that being noisy means metal. Seriously, they need an introduction to Metal 101. Apart from that, most bands right now are going mainstream.

Nope! Definitely metal genre isn't falling. In fact it's the most broad genre and oldest that inspired other genres.
Perhaps the very genuine metal music is rare now, however other sub genres born from it are a lot.
I like power metal, progressive metal, symphonic metal, gothic metal that's all under heavy metal genre.
Only death and black metal I despise.
If this music isn't really broadcasted all around the world, is because heavy metal is not a common favorite music accepted by people. The same as classical music or ballad.
R&B, rap, hip hop, pop, pop rock or rock are under mainstream & commercial music industry which are most of them lame but somehow these are the 'most accepted ones' in society.

Yeah i don't know if this thread allready exists or not but i just wanna say that i ain't that interested in playing Thrash and Heavy Metal no more since theres now shitty stuff like metalcore and screamo. Apparently metal used to be good in the 70's - 80's but it's all dissapeared thanks to the n00bs of today. Now other musical genres are beating it in the charts.

nope. Metal is still alive. it's just that most people prefer other genres instead of metal. I know some goos metal bands that are still going strong and other metal bands that are underrated

Yeah. But I mean by classic metal.

Delete this thread.

Comparing Metal from the 80's to Metal of today is pretty pointless, as it has expanded and no two subgenres really sound alike. You can't really compare the falsettos and solos of an 80's Hair Metal band to the chugging riffs and growly vocals of Death Metal. Even though they both fall under "Metal," they're two completely different types of music.

That said, I think the world today has plenty of good Metal to offer. I love bands like Opeth, Bolt Thrower, and Devin Townsend. If you're more of a fan of 80's stuff, then check out Angra or Ayreon, who I actually consider much better in musicianship than the 80's bands, but they still don't go too "heavy" or crazy with low vocals. It's just straight up Progressive storytelling.
