Referring to the article in the ST Wed, September 3, titled: Now in cinemas: The slobs

It's basically referring to moviegoers who give the cleaners a hard time by leaving behind a mess of popcorn, spilled drinks, and even condoms. Students are highlighted as one of the groups of moviegoers who really leave behind a whole lot of garbage, especially when they have popcorn "fights".

Just wanted to find out, what are your thoughts on this form of inconsiderateness displayed by Singaporeans? And do you think it even is a bad habit that we should get rid of, or is it part of the cleaner's job to put up with our mess?

Also, what other bad habits of moviegoers annoy you?

omg... this sounds like a question for an essay... >.<

Indeed..reminds me of O levels..

As a frequent moviegoer myself, I have come across serveral situations which depicts the ugly side of Singaporeans. Apart from the popcorn being strewned everywhere, there are also the rowdy bunch of students who are either extremly synchronized in the screaming during horror movies, the incessant commentary of what happens next or their unjustified arguments on who's the good/bad guy. Seriously, I'm starting to think that this sort of behaviour is the cause of the increase in piracy. Sure, cinemas have the advantage of good surround sound quality, clear footage, comfortable seats and a wide screen. But honestly, a good surround sound system, wide screen LCD TV, a DVD player, your favourite chair, your favourite cushion and blanket, the optimal temperature which you adjust on your air-conditioner, your favourite brand of your favourite flavour of chips, all this in the comfort of your own living room, minus the crowd and the person who is way too tall sitting in front of you in the cinema.

Back to the main point, yes it is a bad habit that should be rid of and no it is not the cleaner's job to put up with our mess. Yes, a cleaner is hired to keep the place clean but not to pick up after inconsiderate people. Frankly, all those people who created the mess should be made to clean it up. That should teach them a lesson.

Woops..sorry for the lenghtly post

Well im a student myself, and i do those occasionally, food fights are fun, well i know of people who sorta do oral sex in the movies... i do agree it is a bad habit, perhaps we are just immature and just trying to have fun, we dont think of the consequences and we just do it...

Okay, yes we do make the cleaners do their jobs, and i usually think that without people like us, they would be no cleaners, and they would be out of a job.. after all it is their job, so i dont really see whats wrong.. I just read the article, and they only have 10mins to clean everything up...is this the moviegoers fault? I say no, its the management that gives the cleaners so much pressure. they only care about profits dont they? screening as much movies as possible. If they like to make a fuss out of it and blame moviegoers, then why allow food inside in the first place? and when they did, obviously they expect to have cleaners as they predict that there will be a mess.

Movie goers do litter, so what? They paid money and shit to watch the movie, they might have accidentally spilled some food, or someone is angry and starts throwing food... and some horny couples couldnt take it, they go to a movie and have sex, so what? Every cinema has this problem, nothing to make a big fuss about...

From the ST:Seven deadly sins of moviegoers "People who slouch and whose knees keep bumping into the seats of the people sitting in front of them. It's so uncomfortable!" I am one of those, and if the seats were further apart, this would not happen. People would want to sit in the most comfortable postion, and for some people they are too tall, and they have to slouch so as to not block the view of the people behind him/her...

This is just my view, flame me or whatever you want, im just expressing my feelings.

Oh yea, i never answered the qns, erm nothing more.. everything is stated in ST

to answer my own question, i feel kinda ashamed now, of conforming to the societal norm of leaving behind my empty cup or stuff. I think I started doing so like only in the last two years when my friends were saying its okay to leave it there cos the cleaners will clear it up. The article really highlighted the impact of such behavior on other people who have to clean up after me.

Also, in response to leticoz, lets not play the blame game shall we? the cinemas might be at fault for arranging the timings so close, but at the same time, we can help the cleaners by making their job a little easier right? XD And cleaners were paid to clean.. i agree with that, but after working as a room attendant in a hotel for a few months, cleaning up after people, I FEEL THEIR PAIN... lol... i know it's my job to clean, but i wish you wouldnt make such a mess... plus i get paid by the hour, so cleaning up more doesnt mean i get paid more. >,<

resolution: be nicer to people who have to clean up the mess i leave... wait, no, better still... try not to leave a mess for them to clean up.. haha...
