Spurning Square Enix's offer, the Ninja Gaiden-maker is reportedly considering a union with the Dynasty Warriors publisher.

Last week, Square Enix sent waves through the game industry by announcing a "friendly" offer to buy Tecmo for around $200 million. The unsolicited bid would've added the action games of the troubled latter, which includes the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive series, to the massive role-playing portfolio of the former, which features the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series.

While Square Enix's offer put a generous 30 percent premium on Tecmo's stock, it also had a firm deadline of Thursday, September 4. Today, Tecmo President Yasuharu Kakihara rejected it outright, according to the Reuters news service. Instead, the publisher announced is in talks to merge with another Japanese game label, Dynasty Warriors-maker Koei.

"Through a merger, we expect we can grow further by respecting both companies' identities and having an environment in which employees can fully exhibit their skills," the two companies said in a joint statement. Kakihara also said he would not consider another offer by Square Enix, which is considering its next move.

Tecmo shares rose 7.5 percent to ¥937 (around $8.70) on news of the merger, with Koei's stock climbing 0.3 percent to ¥1,552 ($14.41) and Square Enix stock sliding 1.9 percent to ¥3,550 ($32.96). Trading of both Tecmo and Koei shares were halted by the Tokyo Stock Exchange before the closing bell.

Financial details on the Tecmo-Koei merger remained unclear as of press time. However, even a union of the two companies would be around 30 percent the size of Square Enix, with just ¥40 billion ($371 million) in sales. It would also mark the latest round of consolidation in the Japanese game industry, which saw the formation of Namco Bandai in 2005, Sega Sammy in 2004, and Square Enix in 2003.

Er... no comment... What's up with Square lately? Tecmo-Koei? What are the chances that we'll see Ryu Hayabusa on a 'Warrior'[Dynasty, Samurai, Orochi] game if they ever team up... Lol...

To me Squares lost its touch and I dont like Tecmo very much...so i couldn't care less.

Edit: It seems that Sqeenix stopped caring for the quality of their games and is out only for teh money and the fanboys happily dish out their cash. So i guess i can see why Sqeenix couldnt care less if their games are actually good.

Square Enix once again tries to exert to their monopoly on power over the gaming industry. I think Tecmo made a good decision. Their library of games would seem more appropriate with Koei's.

Indeed - saying no to this kind of merger/buyout is either idiocy or staying true to your own product (it's just like companies in the west who got bought out by EA... now they're generally pumping out crap because of EA's deadlines so we have no idea how Square would act if it came to own Tecmo).

I still want Tecmo to make another good Monster Rancher title as a parting gift before they get swallowed up by another company... Even if they put it on Wii, then I'll buy Wii only for the sake of MR... Man, that was a highly addicting game...

Dude I couldnt agree with you more Square hasnt released a very good rpg after FFX i mean the rest after was all medicore. So many core people left so this company is pretty much useless I mean check out their new rpg they just released for the Xbox 360 Infinite Undiscorvery. Complete trash, got horrible reviews and this is suppose to be a company that bought us legendary FF 7, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger. I swear is Square doesnt make FF 13 an instant classic I am done with them. And dont no fanboy come on here saying FF 13 will be good because you havent even played it yet nobody has. People said the same shit about FF 12 and that didnt even live up to the hype.
