All Singaporean guys have to go through national service when they reach 18. They will have to serve a period of 2 years (used to be 2.5 years) and followed by reservist after completion. They will serve with either the Singapore Armed Forces, Singapore Police Force or Singapore Civil Defence Force.

Is this necessary? Some might say its a waste of time. Some might say its good training, discipline and development for youths transitioning to adulthood.

Should it be compulsory, on a case to case basis, on a voluntary basis or should it be scrapped?

What do you think?

I believe that NS should be compulsory, I think the main problem with NS now is that its too wayang liao, wanna do then do properly ma, they do till like for show only...... And they should really solve the white horse problem... You can learn alot in there, good AND bad, i noe some ppl who picks up a lot of bad habit when they are in the army, like smoking etc.

I think it is still right that we protect the place we belong to. Afterall, singapore is our country. Always remember the lessons learnt from World War 2. The British army fought half-heartedly to defend singapore from the invasion of the Japanese from the north because their own priority was their own homeland.

For me, I think Army had made me more resilent. Currently i am serving in a hectic unit that has continuous high key events that stretches all the way till we ORD. However, through these tough times, we learnt to value teamwork and friendships. It is also through my stay i have seen different kinds of people and learnt to communicate with them.

Don't see NS in a bad light too because wheather you like it or not, it is sumthing you have to go through. learnt to pick up the good things and not the bad things and everything will go through as fine. As for those people who only know how to Wayang, they will suffer inevitabily after they leave the schools, so there is not much cause for worry.

Points noted. You've really did make some good points there. I agree with you. You are lucky to be in a consistent active unit. I think the unit that one is posted to will definitely affect how one feels about NS.

NS shouldn't be compulsory. coz becoz of that teh mexican won the gunniess world record of the fattiest man on earth. Singaporean might have the chance but becoz of NS, all hopes are shattered.

Lol!!! Very funny! But its actually surprising to see alot of army regulars quite overweight these days as well. And also i know a few friends that had put on weight during ns when they are posted to units after their bmt.
