I don't realize those quotes as directly contradictory. Of course, music and math are related in that music can be expressed mathematically. For instance the relationships between the notes played, their frequency, etc.

The problem here is imprecision of the terms...science, music, and art. You talk about music itself, as if there were such a thing. One can give a definition, but there is no fact of the matter to be had here.

You are absolutely right. Music is abstract. That's why I believe it is an art. Art (according to me) is infinite and intangible, while science (according to me) is the vain attempt to classify and comprehend that which is infinite and intangible and make it finite and tangible.

Surely making it less abstract can help to draw distinctions (if thats what you are after).

For instance, is the performance of a piece of music more art of science? I think most will agree art. Is the understanding of music theory, the operation of music, more art or science? I think most will agree science.

Think about a case where one is being creative to make a piece of music. Now think about a case where one is following a formula to make music. Here, I think it is also clear in which case we would say one is being more artistic.

Art is that which is infinite, and it is something that cannot be measured; it is relative. No matter how it is created, if it has the power to move people, then it is art.

It's art coz u don't study it like science...sure u do learn some techniques but in the end, you rely on your emotions, creativity and no one piece of music is the same.

Depending on the music genre, music can be poetry, which is, in it's self, art.

i'll say music is an aspect of art...the point of music is to paint a picture in the mind of the listener with words and sound, isnt a picture an artpiece?

however, i think, it can also be said to be arithmetic, coz we are always counting when playing a song...how many counts b/w each note; resting for 1 beat b4 the nxt note; or simply the start count of "5,6,7,8" b4 u play...isnt this arithmetic lol?

but i'll say i prefer music to be art ~^ ^~

Music is definitely art. It has been considered art for centuries, because it is a form of expression.
Science on the other hand is meant to be objective.

That thing about counting is only valid for music with traditional structures, such as rock, pop, rap, country, etc, etc. It wouldn't make sense to say that for noise or industrial, for example, because these genres of music aim towards breaking conventional formats.
However, this is also true for any other traditional form of art. Let's consider paintings as an example. Realism needs numbers for proportions, whereas abstract pieces obviously don't :] Still, this does not make realism less artistic and more scientific.

it depends how ur using the music, while it expresses emotion and is a form of recreation, music composition contains arithmacy, it is also science that allows instruments to be refined and created, music has also been used for scientific studies, like how Mozart is proven to stimulate the brain. but when u play, u play from the heart, and thats wat makes it an art.

my personal conclusion: science is an art or art is a science, it duznt matter. everythings intertwined, all it comes down to, is perspective

it would lean more toward Art. Music largely deals with our sense of hearing so it's art... although science is involved in it, music appeals to our emotion and one of our senses...

Society considers music as art, so there aren't many people who would think it's a science off the top off the top of their heads. I also think it's art, because science can't move you that way. It can't make you cry, it can't make you fall in love, it can't make you reminisce about something you've forgotten long ago. Science is hard cold facts, and music is open to interpretations. Two people can hear the same music and not feel the same thing. And doesn't calling it art make it so much more beautiful =)?

I like your reasoning, and I agree. Most of us see music as an art, because art can evoke powerful emotions, but it could be both at the same time.

I believe it all comes down to opinion.
