Military Mind Reading

In my psychology class last week, my teacher brought in an article she’d cut out of a local newspaper to present to those students interested in a little extra information. The story immediately shocked me.

Essentially it was saying that the military is dedicating four million dollars to scientists from three universities to research mind-reading techniques for various purposes. On further research I discovered that the military has been spending large sums of money on psychic research for more than half a century.

Some skeptics are criticizing the research as a waste of money. Others also fear that mind reading may be used to invade our personal privacy. (Anyone who has ever read Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell would understand why. I’m personally not to eager to have “Thought Police,” marching down the street.)

On the other hand there are undeniable benefits that go beyond simple security. Then again, this is a touch of fascism-invading our privacy for the greater good.

What are your personal thoughts?

Doubt they'll get anything from it, but the concept is scary. If it were real then imagine how easy it would be to abuse that kind of power.

true, if it falls into the hands of criminals, they'll have no problems finding out who the 'rat' in their ranks is...

Then again, would they risk 4 million dollars if there wasn't some kind of real evidence suggesting that there was at least a slight chance? It really is scary...and very cool. The mind is an amazing thing, more complicated than anyone could have ever predicted.

I'm not particularly worried, though, if you want to read more about military experiments in mind-reading and -control, you might want to check out The Mammoth Book of Cover-Ups, which is stocked with one hundred different conspiracy theories and a probability rating for each.

Four-million isn't much as far as research goes.

It's more than they'd invest in a claim that flying monkeys were going to attack. Four million is enough money to show that they’re actually considering it a possibility, which they wouldn’t do without a vast amount of evidence. I’m not saying that it’s a likely thing, but it’s something that even the military cannot completely deny.
