i dont think women in anime are a lot like women in real life to be honest! the way they act is a bit more exaggerated in most cases

Most female characters can typically be placed into one of these broad categories (but don't necessarily have all these qualities)

The push-over (or ideal wife type) :
shy, quiet, subservient, nice, air headed, love struck, clumsy, helpless, easily embarrassed, low self esteem, unimportant (if they aren't the main love interest), guilt complex, relies-on-magic-to-get-anything-done, bento making girl next door type who's life revolves around some guy(s)
Examples: Belldandy (Ah my Goddess) Mikiru (Melancholy of Haruhi suzumiya) Haruka (Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu) Amu (Shugo Chara)

The bitch (or strong girl) :
Loud, brash, obnoxious, stubborn, violent, sarcastic, heavy drinking, conniving, bad driving, back slapping, disciplinary, pig headed, domestically incompetent, dishonest-about-their-feelings, meddling, ego tripping, possessive, petty, sexually repressed, onii-chan molesting, misunderstands everything type girl
Examples: Haruhi (Melancholy of) Urd, (ah my Goddess) Asuna (Mahou sensei negima)

Somewhere in between the two we have the Deadpan girl:
Quiet, intelligent, seemingly humorless, stoic, nihilistic, eccentric, knows more than they let on, bookish, uninterested, glazed over facial expression support character type.

Yes it's impossible to put every character ever into these categories, don't bother mentioning it. My point is that most women aren't portrayed in a very flattering light. They seem to simply just exist for men, as their servants (too dumb to do anything but cook and clean), as their reluctant lovers (They are too dumb to know how they feel) or as sex objects (So dumb it takes them 10 seconds to realize somebody fell on them and is groping them and their panties are showing)

Why do you think women are (or are not) shown this way? Is it just cookie cutter characters of a reflection of Japanese ideals?
Edit: Regardless if you agree or not with my views or categorizations you should still be able explain how you see women in anime. Please don't get hung up on the word bitch

I agree with you on the most part. Anime doesn't really portray women in a realistic way, and the personalities of women in anime get bland after a while. Some girls in anime are different though; something I value in manga and anime.

You'd be the push over type who has a moe speech impediment.

No not really, that's just me being an ass. Try not to take it personally.

i feel so bad for u..... its okay tho.. i think.. but this thread is getting a lil ugly..... poor u.... and to try and help sav ur thread....
writrs seems to mak anime femals in that way, cuz its general, its easy to write stories basd on charactrs lik that.... and a lot of women seem to me that way in a sort... lik me... i might be the strong girl/bitch type... hehe im offensiv but im fine.. my frineds and family r okay so wat ev.... hehe.... but in animes they seeem to completly exaggerat the whole thing... so anime women portrayal is part correct part wrong.....hehe

I think it's obvious why the characters seem to fit into categories, the people who come up with ideas and the writers need to make a strong personality and people are very unique and weird and sorry to say this but females more so then guys... so when they expand a character they tend to follow the ideas of other animes instead of trying to portray how girls are in real life

I mean really the ratings and views of anime would plummet if they made more realistic characters from all the otakus who want to get away from real life... Then we would lose anime! that is a no no

Or I am totally "wrong" and I'll get verbally bombarded by many replies telling me my opinion is wrong even though its my opinion and can't be "wrong" because it is a belief not a statement

its because some girls are really like that. They use them because they have the most striking characteristics and most girls can realate to them in one way or the other. like im kinda like the bitch, and the push-over.
what u forgot to mention in all the types is the moe that is used alot and the women who have giant boobs, which they show even in kiddy anime.

I know, there are not very many female characters that are portrayed in a very good light. All/most of the shojo mangas have girls that are all weak and in need of saving for main characters, or the strong, smart but totally oblivious to her feelings, let along the guys who ends up falling for her

idk..i dun even know what that means!

I fail to see where I can put "Tsundere" into those categories. Or atleast relates to one of 'em.
Perhaps you can enlighten me?
Also I think women are shown that way because authors have an imagination where they "Materialize" their ideal women, which I call a very scary fetish among authors....
