I thought it was great. It was super fluid just like all of the other good fights in Naruto like...

OG series:
Sasuke vs Orochimaru
Rock Lee vs Gaara
Orochimaru, First & Second Hokages vs Sarutobi
Rock Lee vs Kimimaro
Sasuke vs Naruto

Shippuuden
Sakura & Chiyo vs Sasori (the 100 puppet battle)
Kakashi & Shikamaru vs Kakuzu & Hidan (the episode where Kakashi and Kakuzu fight while running up a tree)
Sasuke vs Deidara (giant clay bird episode)
Sasuke vs Itachi

Most of the fights that don't look like this in Naruto are either poorly animated or they aren't fights involving a lot of fast action and movement. Whenever have a camera pan happening while a character is moving (which is usually rare but happened constantly in this episode) they have to draw it like that or do it with CGI. With CGI it looks pretty crappy or it's nowhere near as much motion as the stuff you see in this episode or when Sasuke swings around the tree in his fight against Orochimaru in the forest of death arc.

As far as the fight, I thought it was odd that the Kyuubi could grow trees like the first and Pain had 2nd hokage level water abilities and that his body is pretty much invicible to all physical damage but the fight was kick ass and all of the shots and angles for everything was excellent so no real complaints.

Horrible animation.
Worst yet.
As for the episode, probably half, or more than half was nowhere near Manga related.
And was it just me seeing things, or did Pain just try to kick the Kyuubi / deflect with his arms?
._. Jeez. I think I've been giving the Kyuubi too much credit.

@Sick,
o-o You meant the first, not the fourth, right?

Without spoiling the story can you explain the other abilties, such as the nine tails exo-skeleton and his other abilties where he merged his and naruto's chakra to create some ball but then was just squashed by that mountain and him bursting into many nine tails at the beginning of the episode and him growing giant chakra hands, are they just abilties that they have added this episode from the manga? because in all other fights i can remember with Nine Tails it was just him punching and kicking for the most part.

1. The more tails the less it looks like Naruto and the more it looks like the Kyuubi. At 4 tails it's just the kyuubi's shape, the chakra all over his body and you can't really see Naruto anymore outside of a kinda humanoid face. As it goes up the physical body of the kyuubi starts to develop. That was in the manga and anime.

2. He did that in the manga and anime during his fight with Orochimaru. He mixes the chakra together, compresses it, swallows it, lets it's explode in his stomach and spits out an energy beam.

3. He could always stretch parts of his body out. When he fought Orochimaru he dug his hands in the ground and split out extra arms and stuff to chase Orochimaru around the battlefield and even grew a second top half of his body in the manga and anime. This episode takes it farther than that, but he's got more tails so I could buy it.

Pain's abilities to control water were never shown to be that strong, but he did have some capacity with it as a little kid (manga and anime) and the only other rinnegan user like invented every modern jutsu so it's not impossible for him to be beastly with it.

some people don't seem to get how great the animation was since they seem to only base it on the looks of the character (though to be fair its hard not to laugh at some of the facial expressions) but its not about how the characters look its about the action happening on screen and it was truly spectacular.

yes exactly pain can use all elemental chakra types so it's not that weird for him to have strong jutsus

We haven't seen Pain use any elemental type moves at all, nor has their been evidence of him using such elements.
If anything, the anime just pulled things out of its ass to prolong the episode, so we'd have to wait for Naruto meeting his dad.
Had the anime stuck to the Manga for this episode, we could have easily seen Naruto meeting his dad during the second half.

Seriously for me i really don't like this episode 167. I was thinking it was just a joke. No for some reasons i'm really infuriated. I don't know how hinata could possibly survive with all the rocks and water when she's nearly dead, the hole in Konoha is much more bigger and deep (we can't see konoha anymore and remember it's a village not a city).
There are other things too (like kyuubi attacks and pain's jutsu) who make me think that this episode is just a big, bad joke (they're making fun of us) and this episode isn't worth seeing.

I'll stop now before talking about the graphics, or else i'll write a book.

Well in short, i don't like this episode and i think his place is in a bin. But i'm still glad that a lot of people like this episode.

Pain was using water jutsu as a child. They showed this in the two episodes that were Jiraiya flashbacks.

The anime prolonged the episode but they did by giving us a super well animated and epic fight. I can see complaining if they prolonged it with flashbacks or something like that but they prolonged with good execution on one of the things most people watch Naruto for.
