What I have noticed lately is that the voice acting will be spot on but everything else is butchered to hell and back. Dragon Ball Z and One Piece are examples of this. The voices are pretty on point for DBZ, but it can be so edited and cheesy sometimes. The voices for One Piece I thought were pretty spot on (except for Sanji.... ewww), but we all know how bad everything else turned out.

On the flipside, the voices can totally suck, but everything else is pretty much untouched. I think Naruto is an example of this somewhat, though I just dislike Naruto's voice, everyone elses is ok (Rock Lee's voice is exactly as I thought of it as in English). Yeah a few scenes got knocked out in the beginning, big deal, its mostly the blood. I really like the dub in comparison to many other dubbed anime that got targeted at the tween audience.

i never watch american "anime" and cartoons for one reason..... Some of them are completely fake "anime"..... they try to copy the idea of anime but it comes out so bad.

One very large thing i hate about japanese anime coming to america.......................................................................................................................................................................................................

THEIR DUBS SUCK!!!!!!!!!!! I listened to some sort of anime (forgot which one since a while back) but it didnt fit the anime at all!!!!! Sure there might be some which the dubs are ok, but personally I HATE IT WHEN ITS DUBED

Sorry for caps in some area

I have very few exceptions when it comes to the AMerican interference in anime. these licensing companies here in the U.S. are looking for nothing but money, so they put so little effort into dubbing the anime that they license. Japanese needs to be the new English.

My only exceptions are the Miyazaki films. They are so well done that some people actually believe that it was originally recorded in English. Other than that, Japanese all the way.

The only major problem at times is how much they slash the animation itself. Escaflowne is a perfect example, if you watch the first episode when the dragon is slain you'll notice that the amount of blood in the japanese compared to the english is huuuuuge!

But some english dubs are pretty good, for ex. (think for a moment do you think these characters would sound like this to you if you were to meet them in person?) Brok from pokemon is good, it suits him. In Yu-Gi-Oh pretty much all of the characters voices work well with the characters (I have yet to see the japanese version though), especially Joey. DB, DBZ, and DBGT work well; in fact I think it brings out a bit of the characters and how you percieve them. Cowboy Bebop was superb! Although I think they made Eds voice a little too kiddish, but you get used to it after the first couple of lines she gets. Trigun wasn't half bad, but I would prefere the japanese version.

Now when it comes to shows they've wrecked in terms of dubbing there are too many to name, but I'll name one a lot of people are familiar with... Naruto! There is too much to say about the crappy Eng Dubs its unbelievable. So I'm not gonna touch that one. I'll stick to the japanese version thankyou very much.

That is a big problem, but they should try and get the actors togther then. But it doesn't always happen.

from what i've heard, the naruto dubbed in english is total crap and they killed it...but then i saw "howl's moving castle" that was dubbed, and it was reasonably good and i didn't mind it at all

i guess it depends on effort and the location/topic of the anime itself

Ghost in the Shell subbed is very good.
But Ghost in the Shell dubbed is superb!
They actually took time to find mature voice actors for each character. In Japanese, they voices sound too alike and their lines are too technical.

Dubs have the advantage of extra time to work on more diverse choices and script correction.

But they usually take the "4Kids approach"-rape the plot(maybe new ending), bury any emotion in the script lines, remove cultural references from original nation, replace with fart jokes, LEAVE plotholes intact!, and pump the market with a new child-friendly version of the show, repeat.

Wasn't always like that...

There was once a golden age of dubs. Back when Bandai and AVD actually had a little Quality Assurance going on.

Bandai had a major switch of presidents/CEO's which warranted the abrupt change in posture. Not sure what ADV's excuse was.

Not that it really mattered to me. I didn't even know they dubbed anime until about 5 years ago. Before that I just watched everything in raw format.
