I've read that most of those issues come from areas where you find foreigners like in the red light district of Yokohama. But of course foreigners aren't alone in this there are Japanese people who take them.

And anywhere in the world to get your hands on this stuff its the same rule : If you want to take drugs, you need to make druggie friends.

From The U.S. State Department website:

ILLEGAL DRUGS: Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Japan are strict, and convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and fines. In most drug cases, suspects are usually detained incommunicado, which bars them from receiving visitors or corresponding with anyone other than a lawyer or U.S. consular officer until after indictment, which may take as long as several months. Solitary confinement is common.

Japanese police will arrest for any amount of illegal drugs, including innocuous things like marijuana. There are people who have spent months in jail without being able to contact family or friends, all because they got caught with half a bowl worth of weed. Don't risk it.

*Already that they are cautious of foreigners why would you want to add more to that?

I assume you meant smoking chronic (weed) and not chronic smoking (chain smoking). Chain smoking is apparently pretty big in Japan.

From what a hear they have a very conservative society that looks down on criminals, so finding a dealer might be hard. I mean, I hear you can leave your bike unlocked and it won't get stolen, if the penalties of bike theft are enough to deter thieves I can't really imagine what would happen to those charged with possession.
Also, you yourself need to be careful, possession in your own country might be one thing, but breaking the law abroad is a much more serious affair.

You can just buy 'em in my country. But most people who do that are tourists. I don't know anyone who actually uses drugs.

Because people kind of.. think you're pathetic when you're using drugs. But that's not really surprising.

Ok I can understand that since coffeeshops over there are allowed to sell small amounts of cannabis.

Just so you know, if you get caught, there is no due process. No trial, no nothing. You would be deported immediately, and possibly banned from ever visiting again.

Ok i actually JUST came back from Japan 3 weeks ago. I stayed for 3 weeks with relatives. I stayed in Nagano 2 weeks and 1 week in Tokyo.

From what my relatives/cousins told me, Authorities there are absolutely strict with their smoking laws. You are only allowed to smoke in designated areas. (i.e. smoking area in resteraunts/ fast food places) Same thing applies for smoking outside. A smoking area outdoors would have a cigarette trash bin for disposing your cigarette only.

Consequences: If you are caught Smoking on the street away from a designated smoking area outdoors you are immediately fined with approximately $500 (thats what my cousin told me) and might face jail time.

As for weed....well not only is it HARDER to obtain, but you can only imagine what the consequences are for getting caught with possession of illegal substances.

Juss so you know my cousin is Japanese and studied in Alabama. He lives in Tokyo where he works for Hitachi company. He absolutely hates the smoking laws. lol
