I honestly don't think that anyone would have made a thread like this, so I was lazy and didn't check for dupes. Sorry if I'm wrong

On my time on the internet I've noticed a lot of actions that people do and say on the internet that would be different from real life. I'll admit I've done/said things that I would never say in real life, however I've been wondering if these thoughts and actions represent a repressed part of ones personality. A part that would otherwise would either never or rarely be showed.

I'm aware of the anonymous and the internet is serious business sarcasm, but I feel that what you do online actually might be a part of you were too scared to show in RL or never really considered. I have no real evidence but I can say that I'm incredibly shy in real life and always wanted to find a partner, but never was able. Online I'm much more flirty than I ever would be in real life. While that's not evidence it still shows how I'm less reserved here.

The anime Serial Experiments Lain looked into this theory in 1998.

So what do you think about this topic? Does it explain the flaming and hate found on the net? Do you think there should be studies into it?

the flame here is the result of being ignored in real life so we compensate for it by being attention whores :3

Very nice artgeek. I never act like this in real life.
I'm really just a educated/asian girl lover.

I'm just a fan of free speech.

lol I didn't think it was possible but I'm more of an asshole/douchebag on the internet, the security of anonymity allows me to be more open about myself but yeah I guess I'm an asshole in real life too

Nah there shouldn't be. Flaming is normal, hate is everywhere on the internet. You can't avoid it.

I think I'm pretty much the same irl...

But I know plenty of people who are much more eloquent on the internet. They're funnier, cooler, etc. People who normally aren't very uhmm... socially gifted might turn out to be hilarious on the internet. I've seen this many times, so, yes, I think that internet might bring out someone's 'other side/personality'.
And I honestly think that's a good thing. However, I've seen this go wrong. Some people just feel way more comfortable behind a screen. I know someone who doesn't really 'live' in real life anymore. He's just having a way better time behind his computer. In a way it might be good that he's happy and all. But I think it's more important to just make real friends instead of online friends.

Oh, and, everyone should go watch Serial Experiments Lain because it's awesome.

I think that i'm just more extreme online, but it's more or less still me. I just love to argue, fight, debate. Usually intellectually, but when i get frustrated i curse worse than most people can imagine (Unimaginative pricks). But i think that most people feel that they can let loose more on the internet because it doesn't have any repercussions in real life....... unless it's a stalker, but that's your own damn fault.

I'm still me whether it's on the 'net or face-to-face... though I must admit, it is easier to say/post stuff you wouldn't normally say since there is some level of anonymity involved. Actually, I think I'm worse offline...

Lol Vittoriano speaks the truth, I got a lot better though ever since I picked up Seth philosophy. I use to be an asshole to everybody including myself, now I'm just an asshole on the internet since there's no consequences in pissing off lil kids and the way I see is I'm teaching them a lesson.

But yeah I accepted the fact that I'm an asshole, if I could I'd be an asshole to everybody in comparison to some though I'm actually quite nice!
