since almost all the character names are derived from other characters, do they have to pay Jin Yong/Guo Long?

But then, the names aren't exact duplicate. They're just pronounced the same, but with different characters...

I was just wondering about this since Jin Yong said that Stephen Chow paided 10000 yuan every time he used one of Jin Yong's characters in "Kung Fu Hustle." All but two of the main characters, as well as a large marjority of the minor characters, are named/modeled after Jin Yong's characters; and a lot of the martial arts moves were ones made up by Jin Yong... if you add that up, that's a huge amount of money, but the drama doesn't seem to have that big of a budget....

anyways, anyone know?

I think they'll only have to pay for rights if they borrowed the exact character with the name. Maybe wiki has the answer
