Most games I usually just attack as fast as or as hard as a can. I'll never really "defend" but mostly try to dodge. More often than not though I'm to oblivious when I'm attacking to dodge or block anything.

In RPG's, it's always the STR/ATK stat that I focus on developing first. If dual wield is possible, drop the shield and equip strongest swords. It has its downsides, of course. As for action/hack n' slash, balance. Not really Defense though, more on evade..
