That depends on the game and its battle style. For instance:
~ In Pokemon, I never use defensive moves.
~ In Final Fantasy, I put on shell and protect before attacking.
~ In Tales of..., I raise my character's attack stats as much as possible outside of battle, then in battle follow the pattern of hit-as-much-as-possible followed by dodge then back to the hitting. I spend a lot of time dodging and rarely use the abilities actually meant to be used as defense.

In any game, however, I value speed over the other stats. I suppose I'm more of a defensive fighter in general.

I'm more of a tactical player. I like using stealth, but my strategy varies in different genres.

FPS - I usually use a silenced weapon and try to lay low and get around my enemies, taking them out from behind. It works wonders with snipers. I usually play COD4 and use a silenced MP5 + Bandolier + Stopping Power/UAV Jammer (for hardcore) + Extreme Conditioning. Friggin rapes :3

RTS - I'm pretty bad at these, but I try to send out small waves of units to distract my opponent while I try to build up my forces. Sending in small amounts of units early on can disrupt their ability to fortify their defenses, but this means you have to split up your attention and it can mess up with your resources because you'd have to spend it on making units to distract them with.

RPG - I prefer using a mage class character. While they are hard to use early on, their strengths become so much more useful in later levels. Mostly because of AOE spells. Whereas, warriors can usually only take on monsters 1-on-1. I try to focus on building my magical effectiveness and health first and foremost.

In melee class, Stealth and Evasion for soloing. In magic class, high magic attack, high magic accuracy and high enfeebling.

for FPS i never just stay around and wait for the enemies to come to my base. i run over to their base and unload the bullets.

for RTS i usually wait till the enemy attacks first. i fail at rushing. i usually like booming and then creating a gigantic army to kick my opponent's ass.

I would keep attack and defence at the balance:

For example in FPS I would say snipers are good at balancing attack and defence because if their attacking they always do it at a long range distance, yet for defencing their always move around trying to get a flanking spot on the enemy or they camp near their base if the enemy is doing an all-out attack.

I would do another example for RTS, RPG but I haven't played one in a while so I wouldn't know what I'm talking about
