What Got You Hooked?
Posted 7/17/10
I first saw Gintama at my friends house last year then last month, I started watching it because I heard it's hilarious so I just ended up watching the whole series. I love it because the characters are very interesting and obviously it's so funny. I can't get enough of Gintoki.

Def. the bankai parody that I saw while watching over my cousin's shoulder who, I believe, was scratching her head on why it was so funny.
This show is fantastic! Love the characters..and the seriousness as well as comedy!! XD

I think what got me hook was this hint at a moral lesson in every episode I watched. You know, the ones when they talked all serious and one of the characters talked about a memory of a dying love one or a good friend, or something like that and the sad and deep music kicks in. It makes you feel a sense of peace, its like watching an anime with the same effect as playing Final Fantasy 10. And last but not least its the HUMOR, funniest show ever

I love the humour, plus they don't have the cheesy "your my friend" shitty stuff. That's annoying shit that I've found in most animé (ie hitman reborn). They are not serious at all! But when they do, the scenes were done very well. From the current comedy then all of the sudden goes to drama and action. It's amazing that way, really unique and you'll really get hooked up!

Anyways, their simple jokes and humour always makes me laugh. Just as what I needed for everyday.

Actually they did have the 'because you are my friend' stuff. (Kyuubei Arc, Gin-san and kagura telling shinpachi that they are helping out because they are HIS friends.)
However, it is one that actually make sense, not just some random reason the manga-ka just feel like using every now and then. (naruto....what can I say?) I think Sorachi is amazing because he can make people CRY in the space of 20 seconds. Seriously, all those random five page stories inserted into the manga makes me weep...every single one of them. But then you always laugh when they are suddenly interupted.....I think Katsura should quit being a Joui and write short stories instead. Never had I encountered an anime guy so in touch with his creative side.

I suppose it just really cheered me up during the exam periods and got me over my depressed state!

First episode, soon as Shinpachi was introduced as 'the straight man'.

.oO "Ah, good; finally, somebody writing who doesn't take anything seriously."

Could not stop watching until 75, upon whence I passed out at 4am monday morning after laughing *SO* *HARD* at Prince Hata overdubbing Takasugi's lines. Gintama ate my entire weekend; and I'm not sorry one bit.

"I want to become a steamed cheese roll."

Well, first i thought "yey, another shonen battle manga, let's see what this one's about"
but the humour hit me like a kamehameha, being a fan of mostly comedy works, i simply fell in love with it. It's like being hit by a gatling-gun of horrible puns, references to EVERYTHING, constantly breaking the fourth wall and even defaming it's own magazine.
It's just -too- entertaining, so i can't stop enjoying it.

Honestly, for me it was the third episode. As much as I love Gintama humor, the real reason I watch it is for the moral leasons and the deeper story. Gin's line about protecting what's in front of him just hit me full force in the face and I was like, "HOLY MOLY, I'M GOING TO GET OBSESSED WITH THIS ANIME HUH?" I guess I'm kinda like Shinpachi, as soon as I saw the silver soul I couldn't stop following.XD

Mr Raindrop...
One summer I was watching late night TV while in Italy and went on MTV where suddenly Gintama started. Never heard of it before but I just finished Code Geass a while back and was looking for a new anime to get hooked to so I watched. It was one of those random 2 part episode from the first season (the one about that amanto who lived in a swamp or something and the electric fan) and wasn't very impressed but then that ending started and I thought that maybe it must have been a cool show after all, so I did some research on wiki, started watching it from the beginning on streaming, and next thing I knew I was totally hooked!

I kept seeing it around the site & never heard of it, didn't know what it would be really about but was instantly hooked once I started watching. I enjoy every frame of it.

I would run it down as follows:
It has great humor/comedy.
The blend of historic era crossed with future sci-fi style.
The breaking of the 4th wall & poking fun at themselves/creators/pop-culture/other anime/etc.
Great characters that at times can act careless, mean or stupid, but deep down have heart.
Despite the off-the-wall goofball antics, they can still tug at your heart strings pretty damn hard.
Despite the off-the-wall goofball antics, they pull off some pretty epic action.
The off-the-wall goofball antics.

It's just got everything I could want in one show!

I am now Gintama fan for life!

The first episode, at the beginning, when he got hit by the truck while chasing after a cat. I laughed so hard, I just about passed out. I'm easily entertained that way.
