I just want to ask a question so that I can back-up my essay with "statistics" and some quotes from you guys. What if the United States or countries using the letter or number grade report card system change it to only "pass" or "fail". Basically, what you will see in your report card will only be "pass" or "fail".

Is it a good idea? Why or why not?

What do you think the advantages will be? What are the disadvantages?

What do you think of it? Share your "educated" opinions.

Canada here. I have to say that I wouldnt like this idea because I would like to know in detail how I did in all my classes..it wouldnt be fair to just hand a student a piece of paper with just a four letter word. Everyone deserves to see how well or how badly they did in their classes.

Advantages-if you get a paper saying "pass", you wouldnt have to do alot of explaining to your parents and I think they would be more satisfied too. Theres alot of people who have parents who believe anything under 95% is horrible and unacceptable...with a paper that screams "PASS!" your parents would have less mean things to say

Disadvantages- for both passers and failures...you dont have details on how you performed in your courses or why you recieved that particualar grade
EDIT: you basically have to do all the calculating on your own: gather all your tests and marked assignments and count everything up..that'd be a pain =__=

I hope my points helped you out a bit ^__^ Interesting topic for an essay, I hope you do well. Anyway have a nice day!

i think it would be a good idea just to put pass or fail. that way your parents can only hammer u if u passed or not and not on how low your grades were exactly. shortens up teh lecture

Not a good idea because makes this more of absolute thing where there is no in between. For example I am not peferect so I will not do will in life. A person only has one option in life be perfect or roit away. Considering no one is absolute perfect meaning that know is excellent at everything.

There are a lot factors which disables the notice that world would ever be able to run by pass or fail. Also consider the untied states contains diverse population it is luxurious notice.

adv
* be like china and have genious people with other consider dirt
* rank at number one
* lower population when famine kicks in.

Dis
* wouldn't be america
- ideas of america is that we the people....general welfare
- alot of people in poor life quality of majority
- minorty would rule
- riots disorder
- insvasion from other countries would simple

America was based on the idea that there is no absolute power so by makeing a absolute grading system destory america inself.

Depends on how high you gotta get to pass. If it's about 70%, then most people would do well on everything without much work.

I think they should just stick with numbers and letters...
you dont want a report card saying...
Maths - FAIL
English - FAIL
Science - FAIL
etc. - FAIL
Failing at life - PASS

My idea? Sorry, that is not my idea. I opposed to the idea myself (I thought it was redundant), I am only asking you guys about you're EDUCATED opinions in order to present more statistics and quotes in my essay. Sadly, you failed since you did not read the whole thing.

The point of this argument is to know what others think. Not if it is stupid or not. The forum exists to form a discussion, and without enthusiasm, no discussions will exist.

What was the point of you replying on this post if you thought it was stupid? Why did you not "report" it, which is a very open option for you. Or why did you not leave and ignore it?

I am sorry, I am very stupid, I just had to ask whether how I should support my opposition of this idea.

Scenario:

Person *watching stupid video*

Person: What a stupid video!!

Computer: Why are you watching?

But for those who get high A's , it would be disappointing to not know how much better you are compared to your peers.
