Barely passing and excelling are two different things, and so are falling by a little and totally bombing.

So no.

I'd rather know what my actual grades are instead of just knowing whether or not I passed or failed.

Well, the purpose of education is to raise students to their full potential. How can we do that if the only indication of how well we did in the course is determined by a simple pass or fail? Likewise, another student could just as easily pass the same course with less effort, and we would see no difference. In that case, students in general, will eventually stop putting effort in studying and doing homework because we know that all we need is a "pass". Its like saying the minimum mark is good enough! Students become less motivated, etc, etc... you see where I'm going .. xD

It would be different however if the passing mark is higher than the normal 50%. Say we make passing = 80% <-- it's considered a decent mark! Everyone would try hard to pass that, and though some may not have put as much effort as other, we know they're still doing well if they receive a "pass" because the base mark is higher. But those who achieve even higher marks wouldn't be credited. Not to say that we should hail all the smart kiddies, but positive reinforcement = good and motivates students to do better! But in the end it would still the same... students will lack a full report on how they really ARE doing in the course... which, I think, is an essential part of learning.

Academically, I see no advantage.

soo yeah.. I think its a bad idea.

heck no... that would be of no fun.....

there can be some advantages..like everyone would be equally leveled by the knowledge that they have, there wouldn't be any discriminations between the smarter kids and those who really dont do well in school..

but the biggest disadvantage would be more kids procrastinating with schoolwork..knowing that they passed wont make em work harder for a higher grade.

you dont realize your just barely hangin on in this system...for all u know u could hav a 70, or a 100. Pass on this idea

But for those who get high A's , it would be disappointing to not know how much better you are compared to your peers.

Science - FAIL
etc. - FAIL
Failing at life - PASS

Is it a good idea? Why or why not?
No. So that you'll know your standard.

What do you think the advantages will be? What are the disadvantages?
People will never get better, there won't be much competition either.

What do you think of it? Share your "educated" opinions.
Competition makes people try harder. To learn from their mistakes so grades do matter.

mg i dont like pass/fail grading system. I had that one for one of my subjects and i worked really hard and i knew i could have gotten top marks for it and i got a pass. people who barely put effort in but managed to pass also got pass. i thought it was unfair.

i'd like to know by how much i failed or passed. but generally speaking it would definitely have a positive aspect because people can't judge you by marks any more, the only information they'd get would be that you passed or failed. so that would be one positive aspect.

but what about when you get into a university. would the prerequisite be to just pass? i somehow doubt that. i like to know exactly how much i passed or failed by.

I oppose the idea. The disadvantages take up a larger portion to me. In Singapore, it's graded based on 1-8. 1 is the best, 8 is the worst. It has a wider range, so I guess it's easier to know which category you fell in and pick up from there.

haha itd be a good idea to those who are doing the least amount of work to get by school but a bad idea to those who are actually trying.
