Experiment with the different keys/notes until you *think* that you've hit the right one.

You have to be able to differentiate different notes/pitches by ear and then keep playing around with the keys.

But I dunno if you can be taught to do it, I mean, I play by ear but no one ever taught me how. I just do it, y'know?

the point is u've got to be familiar with the piano first if u are familiar the melody should come to ur fingertips easily and as for the left hand chords, it can be figured out easily^^ but of course it needs training for most people whereas some have inborn ability~but it's all fun experimenting so i say give it a blast and try! U'll be surprised to see how much u're rewarded if u achieve that ^^

learn how to tune a piano, or tune an instrument. easiest instrument would be a string instrument. if you can't do it after that then your tone deaf

Uhh.. well...Just try different notes on the piano until you get it. If you really need help, print out sheet music from the internet.

I don't play the piano but I play the guitar mostly by ear. Interval and Functional pitch ear training helped a lot. First, I think you need to know the intervals, scales and chords on the piano before you train your ears. After doing so, you could go to these websites for ear training:

this one is for Interval recognition: http://www.iwasdoingallright.com/tools/v2_23/ear_training.aspx (scroll down and read to give you an idea of Intervals)

and this one is for Functional Pitch recognition: http://www.miles.be/fet.html (you need to download this one). Functional Pitch recognition kind of uses the "Do-Re-Mi" which they also call Solfege.

Just practice your instrument and ear train a lot so that you can hopefully play by ear. Hope this helps and good luck on your ear training!
