I don't think Zoos should be abolished but this is just based on my own preference and desire to see animals with my own eyes instead of through a television screen. In truth, I'm particularly indifferent towards what happens to animals unless I've made some connection with them.

People who really want a good opinion should really read the book "Life of Pi". The first few chapters have some prettyt good insights into zoos.

Good book. I'd forgotten about that one.

idk, if theres zoos out there, they should at least give them a big environment like the wild. One time when i was little and went to the zoo, i saw this black pahther in this glass window "cage" thing, it didnt even have enough room to move. It so mean the way they treat animals........but the good things are that you get to study them and learn more about them and it sometimes protects them, like say if they were in the wild they can get shot by poachers as fur coats

The Zoo that I live nearby is really great. Most of them aren't living in cages anymore. They're saving up more money so they can accustom the ground to the original living space of the animals.
Btw: if you close the zoos, where do the animals have to live then? They'll probably go extinct because we're cutting everything down so we can build more houses..etc...grrrrrr....zoos should stay!!!

Having just had a debate over this issue I'm intrigued as to what everyone thinks about zoos.
Do you believe that animals should be kept in zoos?
Do you agree with some zoos and not with others?
Would you condone zoos in general?
Most importantly - why do you hold this view?

Personally I believe that there is a place for zoos in society;
=> as educational centres
=> for the premotion of science
=> for the premotion of environmental conservation
=> as scientific centres
=> as places of cultural enrichment

I would not condone zoos which;
=> Mistreat animals
=> Have inadequately sized cages
=> Do not provide animals with suitable environments
=> Do not respect the animals' rights

yes i also agree with you....

What about some animals like the giant panda who would have probably died out because of human expansions? The zoos are the only place they are safe to reproduce...slowly. But large animal parks are amazing. Theres plenty of places where the animals are free to run... Hell I'd live in it.

i 2 agree with henz_lan. But i think places where there are no cages would be better like safari or summut like that. i guess we will never know what animals are thinking but i swear ever time that i have gone to a zoo and looked at the animals they either look scared or bored or like they are about to eat me.
no cage s no one likes being locked up!

i think zoos are educational for children and adults and help many endangered and threatened species be protected from poaching, nature and human impact on their environment.

zoos no conservation centers, yes. Tho they want me to believe that theyre the same. Zoos just give us an excuse to go plowing through natural habitats so we can feel good about sticking Mr. rhino in a cage.

Zoos should not be abolished since it's pretty clear that their benificial aspects far out-weigh the negitive ones.

i think most zoos are pretty good, and a lot of effort has been put in to really take care of the animals...and ya...they're a fun a place to be. haha.

well basically i don't like all that. imagine yourself in a wire cage / any other sort of things you might find in zoo , with humans pointing , looking , laughing , etc. and you are in a show , forced to do things or you'd be left with no food / whipped / etc. well , let's extend the boundaries. hmm if it's to research for cures , it's okay and i dont really like people keeping pets , leashed and all that. they sell them , buy them and says they 'own' them. but do animals really belong to anybody? Mother nature ought to be shared . you might not share my opinion but everyone's free to think what they want to. That's why we were given a mind to Think to Love to Laugh and of course to Move

lol i didnt expect to see a topic like this on crunchyroll... it made me laugh. but anyways i actually went to a zoo last month for the sake of my niece and nephew [i personally dont care for them]. and every single animal there was either depressed or hiding. i dont know about abolishing them but... im not a fan of zoos, thats for sure.
