Choose your favorite ranking table

You be surprise there are 5 nations who are No.1 in the olympics but there are no champions in the olympic. On the official website it shows china are no.1 but the truth is there's no offcially way of ranking the medal table even though from many generations almost all nations including IOC prefer to rank it by the no.of gold medals just because they think it's more important. However having the most gold or total medals don't mean they are the best in all areas because if you take a look at China and Usa in other ranking tables there not even in the top 20.So neither countries of athletes can call themselves the best or the champions.

Edit: For those who think their athletes did bad at the olympics you should be proud that your nation have even 1 medal as there 200+ nations participating with only 81 countries who won something. As for china and usa rivalry let's just call it a draw.China with 51 golds and 100 medals (15 golds more than usa).United states with 36 gold medal and 110 medals (10 silver/bronze more than china) both countries are champions in their own way.

You tend to start flame wars =/

Umm...let's talk some olympic.

I think micheal phelps was impressive winning 8 gold medals in swimming that's like 25% of america's gold medals. I think the germans are also proud to have him swim for america.

Just my personal opinion but I also feel they should rank a new table showing Australia, South korea and Netherland at the top 3 rank because if you think about it the gap between those nations in gold and medals are so much more closer to united states and china and not to mention there's also a huge difference on population but of course there still many who also argue that population don't matter.

He's a Maryland boy

I think population does matter, it gives a country more of an advantage. Wasn't Australia, South korea and Netherland underneath China and the USA?

The world would much rather watch world cup football (soccer) rather than american football.I don't think the world cares,I would much rather watch baseball instead.

Good for him,he's no doubt the best male olympian.Other great sport heroes like 3 gold medal usain bolt(jamaica) world record breaker and zou kai(china) 3 gold medals on gymnastic(hanging, parallel bars, floor dance) should be happy with their achievments as well.

I'm not too sure because if you look at india they have almost the same population as china but they only achieved 3 olympian medals other countries with over 150 millions nations don't even have a medal but I'm sure they all must have their own reasons. In medal per population usa are ranked at 32 china at 47.

I think usain bolt was more impressive too or at least equally impressive. But the majority of voting seems to think micheal phelp was much better.

Well micheal phelps won 8 gold medals and usain bolt won 3 gold medals but like you said if usian bolt were in more competitions than he be the most impressive olympian. He's also the only jamaican male to have win 3 gold medals I'm sure the jamaican's are treating him like a king.
