I don't see what's the big deal about Linux. I don't find it to be a good operating system.

Though if I need an operating system for a server, then I'd choose Linux.

Thanks! I'm downloading Ubuntu right now.
I decided to switch...^^ Hopefully I'll manage
if I don't I can always switch back to XP SP3 hehe...

So how do I work Wine? that sounds pretty cool!

yeah, CR does look funny.
I'm gonna try Beryl and fix the interface, etc. I'll see...

So everything i'll ever need will be on the ubuntu forums right?
like links to programs and stuff? especially dvd players..etc
questions:
1.does yahoo messenger have a linux version? because I totally adore it
2. Do I need to have an antivirus program when I use ubuntu?

yeh...are you going to dual boot it?

and i have never tried using wine before, and i'm more of a newbie than you becasue i don't know what the hell Beryl is...

and the ubuntu forms are pretty good since its open source...alot of people will help, though if you are wanting to download programs and software then you're in look because theres something that's built into ubuntu S..... manger something (i'm on windows at mo forgot what its called) which basically you search for the program and ubuntu automatically downlaods and install for you. ubuntu comes with a great Media Player!! don't worry else you can use VLC.

and i'm not sure about yahoo but it comes with something called pidgin which is basically a Instant messaging thing that you enter your details and it'll connect for you!! it uses the same protocol as msn or yahoo which lets acts as a yahoo messenger or msn.

and you don't need anti virus software though you can if you want. theres just no point in creating virus' for linux or mac so its pretty safe!

hey sorry for late reply....i went to bed hah.

well dual boot basically means that when i start my computer i can either choose to use Ubuntu or Vista. Vista is my main OS but i partitioned (split) my hard drive and the other bit has ubuntu. thats the good thing about linux...it uses so little space...

and i'll check out beryl thanks.

Dual = 2
Triple = 3

Dual-booting means that you have two Operating Systems in your computer.
You can also have triple boot or even more.

You can have Mac OS X, Windows, GNU/Linux in the same computer :)

Every time you turn on or restart the computer, you will be presented the choice to choose the operating system you will like to use.

Well, after browsing the desktop pictures thread in hope to see a few linux users, I was saddened. I only saw one. Just one, yes, holy shit one. To be honest, I was surprised to actually find that one. So, I've decided to take the liberty to ask for other Linux users.

Feel free to:
Ask what Linux is, for the computer illiterate.
Talk about Linux.
Ask about Linux.
Give advice, etc, anything related to Linux. : D

For most people Linux is pointless, there normal OS do fine for them and they never care or think about it, chance's are if Linux can benefit you, you already have it. But don't get me wrong, I love open source, Linux ftw

Linux pointless? These people are nuts! They must have hit their head with something . A mega corporation is charging us money for an OS, and will charge another for some useful tools (office, etc.). Linux people and its community are kind to offer these things for free. Free as in beer, just sit back and enjoy free beer.

As for gamers, don't throw your copy of whatever OS you're using. Wine is not as versatile as you think it is. And using Linux is to use Linux. Linux and its native programs, not some buggy commercial thingies. And don't make comparison of any other OS to Linux just because of games. Porting of so called games to Linux will be chaotic. Some people just wont like it, because Linux is supposedly free and if these games are ported to Linux, you know. Just wait, Linux will have better free games to match these commercial ba***ds.

Let the commercial one's be commercial and leave Linux alone. Maybe they need Linux, but Linux don't need them.

It wasn't a good idea to update to the new Hardy Heron for Ubuntu. It comes with Firefox 3 which sucks because it is still in it's beta stages and it takes like forever to load webpages without it crashing on me.

I like Linux quite a lot because I don't have to worry about viruses as much as I would for a windows machine. I'm also much more productive because I don't have access to games lol.

I can't use Linux for the following reasons.

I don't have a installer for it
I'm not good enough on computer softwares to handle Linux; Maybe I'll try Mac first. Currently using windows
I don't have my own Desktop; I'm using one that is shared at home thus I can't make any major changes.
Lack of support with softwares and some hardware like cellphones, Printer Drivers DVD Burner, and etc.(Most softwares, Hardwares is only compatible with windows and sometimes Mac.)
Lack of free time to do so.

I would like to give it a try but someone send me some basic links for downloading it first. The Slax(No need to overwrite the existing OS right?), Beryl and other essential things for it.
