I was in class and the teacher started talking about how we romanticize things that are often gory or humiliating, because in truth they were gory and humiliating and how we wouldn't want to remember something that's supposed to be heroic in that manner. Anyways, he eventually went to talking about the Passion and how it needed to be put in that way to put Jesus aside as something different even at death. Regular Crucifixion was humiliating as you were nailed and hung up, screaming to be taken down, while eventually dying from exposure to the elements. At this point I'm thinking "that makes sense" but the point that really got me thinking was :

What if Jesus wasn't crucified but killed in another fashion?

What if he had been hung or decapitated? Would we still romanticize it in another way such as wearing a noose around our necks rather than a cross?

Or worse yet, what if he was publicly drowned or just taken into a corner and run through?

I don't know...

What do u think?

You should take in the fact there is NO Real Evidence for a Jesus at all. (0 proof for him!)

Yes, but that's only tangentially related.

As for the topic of this thread, you're right, the cross only has the importance it does because of the Jesus story. So?

Crucifixtion of Jesus...was meant to be that way. crucifixtion was one of the most painful way of dying...
they say that when the nail goes through the hand, the tendons and muscles tense up...and keep the person held in place....the painfulness of it all...the person never lasts too long....and jesus survived 3 hours of that....

in christianity to show god's love to us through his son and all that...the suffering of jesus was what was important...
the point that only the worst criminals were crucified...the symbolism in that was crucial too. a great teacher, preacher, healer, son of god...dying like a murderer...the degration of status

if he were to die any other way...where would be the symbolism?
if he died like it was an accident...just like an odinary man..they would just say that he was a great teacher that accidentally died...
but instead, he was falsely accused and crucified...that is the whole point of it all...

Yes they are, and it doesn't disturb me. I have said this 100 times. Goodness does not atone for sins, and as long as those people refuse to repent and live in their sins, then they are going to hell. If their works got them into heaven, then that would mean that they are the judge above God, which isn't the case. Good works are blessed, but they don't atone or remove sins, we can't forgive ourselves because our offenses are against God.

if you believe that people doing charity work to help improve the lives of people deserve eternal torture because they don't believe in your faith then something is wrong with your religion

if u don't know shit about christianity than don't say anything... according to Christianity, well Catholicism to be exact, it doesn't matter what religion u believe in as long as u follow ur faith faithfully u can have eternal life in heaven... u could be buddhist and still go to heaven u could be a jew and still go to heaven.. i'm guessing satanic cults don't apply. just becuz u don't believe in jesus doesn't mean u go to hell.... if u live a f$%ked up life than u go to hell.
