I love the arguments on how much better anime is drawn and how much more mature it is. Anyone ever hear of shows like Crayon Shin-chan and Chibi Maruko-chan? Both shows are consistanly in the top 10 in anime ratings in Japan for nearly the past two decades. Neither I would call mature or well drawn. What about Sazae-san? More of a family show than a kids show but hardly what some people are making anime out to be and it's been running since 1969 and still gets the top spot in anime rankings more often than not. Compare these to movies like A Scanner Darkly. How's that stack up?

Anime is NOT high art. It is a commercial entertainment media like American cartoons and both have a very broad range of material if you just look for it. If you fear some "cartoons are for little kids" stereotype, that is your own issue not some stigma you can remove by trying to make anime something separate.

Yeah I'll just go door to door around the entire world and explain how anime is made for older audiences.

I think the only one having a hissy fit here is you. Go smoke a bowl or something.

I was five years old when I first watched "Hell Teacher Nube" that cartoon in the Phillippines oh yea they put it on a kids network aswell. That was the first japanese style cartoon (anime) I have watched as a kid back in those good old days where we don't really care if its a cartoon or anime because nobody gives a shit.

This all goes by opinions by people what they consider anime or cartoon.

Pardon me, I didn't think I needed to be so precise with my words, but what I meant was "the genre 'anime' includes many shows that target an older audience than American cartoons do."

American cartoons like Family Guy, The Boondocks, etc. aren't targeting any younger of an audience. Rob Zombies El Superbeasto was certainly not meant for kids and it earned it's R rating quite admirably, including it's message to American cartoon fans that (slightly obscene remark)
It's still a sequence of drawn images arranged to form a moving picture either way, no matter how you over-generalize things.

Animation in general has different styles: cartoon (from whichever region), anime, CG/3D, etc. so I wouldn't equate all. I'm not saying this out of "bias".

Jesus fucking christ. I'm so tired of having to write clearer than I would for an English class to satisfy you mother fuckers. I've finally hit my limit of patience here. If you want to pick apart every last word apart instead of trying to understand what I'm saying, then fine. I'm gonna go get high.

Cartoon is Kiddie Crap
Anime is Japanese Animation

Cartoons = 3+
Anime = 12+ (Most)

Cartoon's highest rating... 7+
Anime's Highest = 18+

the Above evidance proves Anime doesn't class as a cartoon

Simpsons, South Park & Family Guy doesn't count towards Cartoon they count as American Animation LOL

No, we understand what you are saying but disagree strongly with your opinion. If you can't deal with that then get the fuck off the internet. Or better yet, try reading a dictionary: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/animated+cartoon?r=75

If that isn't enough for you kids; it is a little outdated. Here is a wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animated_cartoon

So, how does anime NOT fit?

Ok guys, Im going to give a little Internet tip right here.

When someone says something like.......Anime is meant for older audiences than cartoons......they dont mean that EVERY SINGLE ANIME is meant for older audiences and EVERY SINGLE CARTOON is meant for younger audiences. I think its kind of dumb how people reply back with an example to prove the other person wrong....when its common sense to know that an absolute statement of always and never are probably incorrect. You guys need to figure this out.

And this is my take on anime and cartoons.

I believe "Animation" is the top category.....cartooons and anime are sub categories of animation....they are types of animation, and I think the majority of the anime community would believe this too.

Saying anime is cartoons would be like me saying "Blue pencils are the same thing as red pencils" Sure they are both colored pencils....but they are obviously not the same thing

Now how does that apply to anime and cartoons? This. "Anime is the same thing as cartoons" Sure they are both animation,.....but they are obviously not the same thing.

And I believe that.

There are so many visual differences between anime and cartooons ( THE MAJORITY OF THEM, for those who feel like they need to use 1 cartoon or anime as an example to disprove this).....there are so many differences in the way the episodes are presented (THE MAJORITY OF THEM)....there are so many differences on the types of plots that are used (FOR THE MAJORITY OF THEM)..........and anime generally is aimed at an audience that is older than the audience for kids (FOR THE MAJORITY OF THEM)

Due to this logic. I dont see why we DONT ALREADY classify them as different. It sure as hell would make sense to classify things are so very different to each respective categories right?

Just because Anime was originally meant to be a shorter term for Animation.....doesnt mean that we cant just use Anime to classify types of animation.

And just in general....just because any word can have a formal meaning....dont mean that the word doesnt change when we use it online or in general.....words change their meaning.

Instead of calling animation coming from America..."American Animation"....the MAJORITY of us call them Cartoons.
Instead of calling animation coming from Japan..."Japan Animation"....the MAJORITY of us call them Anime.

Why is it so hard to just accept them as different? It sure as hell makes sense to. And to the guys who say that anyone who disagrees with them about "Anime are cartoons" are butthurt....I think you guys should look in a mirror, since I could use the same arguement against you

Conversely, why all the rage that they MUST be different?

I personally think there's silly egos involved.

I'm looking in the mirror. I don't see someone who started a thread that rages over the need to get it right: That anime must be different from cartoons and those who can't see it are dumb or ignorant.

Are the majority of imported Japanese Cartoons way cooler than american cartoons? yes.
Is Anime an okay short hand for 'imported Japanese Cartoon', sure. but it is slang. Yes

Is it annoying when people learn you like imported Japanese cartoons and think you're a Narutard? absolutely.

Does it mean I agree with the butthurt and angry assertion that "anime is NOT cartoons RAWR!!" NO

Well if you werent a person who said that "People who say that Anime arent Cartoons are butthurt", then you had no need to look in the mirror, since this wasnt directed at you.

essentially that's what I WAS saying. I'm also saying that I don't see anything in the mirror.

I'm NOT the one insists they MUST be different.
And WHY MUST they be different to the point of rage? "It's NOT a Cartoon! damn you!"

because people ARE butthurt when they hear the word for something they dislike used for something they like.
It's because of the value judgments that THEY place on those words. not a problem with the words.

I think it has more to do with the person in question needing to feel like a super special snow flake. Or as if they are super edgy for likeing anime.
