Even some cartoons can be as entertaining as some anime. Its not impossible.
The main difference I see is delivery - Save for a few anime, most are ongoing, where as with american produced cartoons, an episode can be watched without relation to another episode, more often than not. I know with anime, I can't just pick up an episode (usually) to watch - Rather, I have to watch the full show, start to end.

But at the moment, the western cartoon studios stop at more a 'shounen jump' demographic - They can be watched by late teens, or adults, and enjoyed - They get pop-culture references, and innuendoes and stuff, but its still fun for kids. I can't even think of western animation on the same kind of level as some of the darker, more serious serious, or more thought provoking, or, well - even the ecchi anime. (GITS, Fate/Zero, SAO, TLR, etc) - Due to demographic differences, these kind of themes will not be fully explored in western animation. Not soon anyway. Even if they tried, they wouldn't succeed like they seem to do in Japan, with westerners being blockheads, who can't get over the idea that 'animated makes it for kids' -w-''

Well; people should watch what they enjoy, and let others do the same =)

Well anime is cartoons what annoys me the most is the people who believe that any drawn film or series is for kids only and that adults should only watch shows like CSI etc

Anime = cartoon.
The style of which it's drawn and such is all influenced by Japanese culture. It's the same in any other country!

to me
animation is what it all is:
anime and cartoons are subdivisions of animation and they differ because of the styling and other stuff depending on where it's being made

I know there are passionate people about this topic, but I do not care either way. But to be honest you just cannot beat the old cartoons like Looney Tunes, Road Runner and Coyote, Yosammite Sam, etc. Also we have shows like the ORIGINAL X-Men, Transformers, etc... that are also in a comic books...hmmm.... what is the big difference...

The..? Animes ARE cartoons... I mean to me "cartoons" means "animated series". So you have JAPANESE cartoons and AMERICAN cartoons... o_O

And I actually think cartoons (not the recent one, mostly old school ones) are WAY better than animes. Animes get to get every stereotype repeated when cartoons (except japanese when I say that... >>) can be very original and funny. When animes are a lot of times very slow to get to the point, most cartoons doesn't.

Just thinking about Avatar: The Legend of Korra, it outpass every single action anime in this world with those gorgeous animations quality...

I glanced at a few comments and noticed that some people mentioned "style" with anime, as if all anime have to follow a certain style to be considered anime. First off, as many have mentioned and my response to the original topic, anime refers to cartoons (by definition, animated drawings) that are made in Japan. In Japan, anime refers to any and all cartoons, regardless of where there were made. Therefore, regardless of which definition you choose, anime are still cartoons. Just accept it. The point I want to make is that anime only specifies where the cartoon originated from, in this case Japan, not what it looks like. For instance, if (hypothetically speaking) Family Guy was made in Japan rather than America, and it kept the same art style, humor, and even the same actors/actresses for the English dub, it would still be considered anime. "Style" doesn't technically matter, though yes most anime, especially current anime, have certain styles unique to themselves that most other cartoons do not have.

Anime is short for animation. Cartoon is animation, therefore anime IS cartoon.

Anime have detailed backgrounds, great character designs, and thought out plots that continue from episodes to episodes.

Cartoons don't.

That's the difference, don't compare the two simply because they're created the same, or else I'll have to say CG movies are basically video games without control.
