Animes are cartoons, they are Japanese cartoons. If you dont like this, then i´m pretty sure people will agree to calling them "Animated-Series".
Are you displeased with yourself that you enjoy watching cartoons, well if you are, then maybe you should stop watching anime.
Anime is just a style of cartoons:over-sized eyes, spiky hair etc.
And the depth of thought and character development is a great deal more significant than in other genres, so i don´t mind it if anyone says that i still watch cartoons, because its true. I just make the distinction between good Anime and sucky cartoons clear to people i know, and if anyone else has a problem with it, then i have to say that i don´t really give a damn what they say.

If you go to the "Anime" section of http://www.amazon.co.jp/ , Amazon Japan, you will find that they are selling many American cartoons there as well, so from the Japanese perspective you could say anime and cartoons synonymous. At least that's what they seem to think. The sweet Japanese lady who used to work over at my local Kinokuniya Book store seemed to think that way.
I call these Japanese cartoons "anime", I know some people that still call it "Japanimation".
Seems like it's really a matter of semantics, SO,
If you are offended, get a life.

It's a japanese cartoon <.<!! = Anime But I think I want anime to be a bit far away from that category, because of it's nature of stories and the age based series, like I would call Pokemon a sorta cartoon. While I would call Code Geass an Anime.

Depends on how you define the word "cartoon"
In the literal sense, then yes, anime is a cartoon. Anime are but drawn images that have been given animation. Hence, a cartoon (or more punctually animated cartoon).

Of course, here in the states at least, the colloquial definition of cartoon is seen as just entertainment for kids/teens. There are of course cartoons aimed at adults, but those typically focus on humor (Family Guy, Simpsons IE). Anime on the other hand obviously covers a much wider range of topics/demographics and hence does not fit the colloquial definition of cartoon.

Really, it's just a giant game of semantics, and really does not bother me.

They just are ignorant and have no clue how amazing anime is. Usually I ignore them. They call it Pokemon.

I don't understand how there can be 169 pages of people talking about "anime" being different from "cartoons".
You'd think the first page would have sufficed, but apparently not.
Anyway, I refer to anime and cartoons as either "animations" or "cartoons". I never got people's issue with calling animes "cartoons" when that's exactly what they are. What, is the word "cartoon" too childish for you? Why do people even associate "anime" with being adult? It's really not. Sure, there's anime for adults, but guess what! There's also anime for young kids and teenagers! And the same applies to western animation. Both Eastern and Western animation can appeal to multiple demographics. They can also use a wide variety of animation styles and artistic designs. I don't understand what made people think otherwise.

Cartoons weren't originally made with children in mind to begin with.

I haven't stopped at anime. I've also watched some Korean, Russian, and Ukrainian cartoons.
