Yes, I get infuriated when i hear that, people always say anime are japanase cartoons, but thats wrong, anime=japanase "animation", cartoon= american "animation", basically they are both animation but they are 2 completely different things.

Instead of that, use: cartoons = simple form of entertainment and, all adult cartoons = South Park

Anime = more diverse form of entertainment

guess that works as well, well the point is they are both animated forms of entertainment, boring cartoons and anime with lots of feelings

But it is.
An animated cartoon is defined as: "a motion picture that is made from a series of drawings, computer graphics, or photographs of inanimate objects (as puppets) and that simulates movement by slight progressive changes in each frame"
Which is exactly what anime is. Anime are just cartoons made in Japan, there's nothing in that definition that says cartoons are for kids.

I personally don't understand what the hang up is. If someone thinks that watching cartoons is only for kids, that's their issue.

Anime is cartoons. They are both animated. You can't say that something is a cartoon because it is something that kids watch. Look at Family Guy, American Dad, Archer, etc. These are not aimed at children, but they are still cartoons. There are japanese anime that are aimed at children (Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Hamtaro) but are still called anime even though kids watch it.

names are just names. it's the stigma that adult can't watch cartoons that people want to separate the two. the animation age ghetto. I don't care it when people call anime cartoons. I care when they dismiss for kids stuff it because it's animated. yes, some of it is for kids, but to dismiss an entire medium because of it's looks. that's what gets me.

for people who want to separate cartoons and anime do something similar. they associate cartoons with kid's stuff and want to anime to be different to not be bundled with said association.

C.S lewis once said

Critics who treat "adult" as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adults themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence....When I was ten, I read fairytales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man, I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

isn't that reasonable?

You otaku just want to distance yourselves from the "cartoons are for kids" stereotype. Japan's studios make their baby shows just like we do. Same with all the adult stuff--we've also got that covered.

I have never thought cartoons are just for kids, just like you said there are anime for kids too, and there are cartoons like SouthPark and Family guy (hate those shows more than i hate Tiffa, and thats a lot of hate) that are defintiely not for kids,, is just that cartoons are.....boring

Japan makes its share of boring cartoons, America makes its boring cartoons.

There's also the cultural differences to account for. Japan never had the taboo against nudity that we did until after the Meiji era. Even then it didn't fully take effect until after World War II ended.

I think that anime and cartoons are heavily different in the majority of aspects.

"Cartoons" are typically directed towards younger kids, while a significant portion of anime (seems at least) directed at teenage audiences.

Mature themes, such as evolution and religion, are a lot more prevalent in anime than in cartoons I believe.

hahaha. This should have been the first post.

You mean last LOL. Well, I can't argue that they are totally different styles of animation, but not everyone wants to see it that way. It's like there are ppl that lump rock and country music together for use of the same instrumentals (yeah, I've met ppl like that).

Well, first and last post. lol They are different styles of animation like you said. ( I think you put can't instead of can). But I think we can all agree that they are indeed animated. I think what they original poster may have misunderstood is that when some people say cartoons they're just trying to say it's animated. Like someone said earlier, "Animes are Japenese cartoons." Like, Rock and Country may be different but it's still music . . . or is it noise?

I've seen some goofy Japanese 'anime' before. Lots of 'cartoons' have solid stories too... :D

Technically they're all the same thing arent they? They're just animations.

The difference comes in what you associate it with. Japanese animation normally deals with a lot more mature themes, compared to western animation, and I associate it a lot more with that - as well as sexual themes etc and, of course, differing art style.

Moreover, you might not like the association because anime means so much more to you. Seriously, no western animation or live-action film for that matter, has ever made me cry or feel as much as some animes. In that sense, anime is very special to some people and being referred to as simple 'cartoons' can be undermining.

Ultimately though, I think they are all technically animations/cartoons xD
