I don't care what people call it. I just know if anyone watches some anime they will see how many of them are pretty intelligent and well thought out. Not just slap stick humor.

I'm responding again against my better judgment. I get the fact that anime fans hate when people think all anime is for children just because it's animated. They want people to know that there's more to it, deeper. I get it. I know b/c I also hate when people pigeonhole western style of animation by calling it 'slap stick' humour and saying they're just 'cartoons' like it's a dirty word . But since people aren't familiar with something they make generalizations. So I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Anime is a form of cartoon, which is a form of animation. So technically cartoons do have actual stories and character development. Now, there are cartoons in places outside Japan that have both of those things. An example is Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel, The Legend of Korra. In France, there is Oban Star Racers and Code Lyoko. As for the difference, the real difference is that anime is a style of animation (cartoon) originating from Japan and it's the abbreviated form of the Japanese word for animation, animēshiyon. To summarize they are the same thing, which is simply animation, and whether it be 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional it doesn't matter. Animation in this sense is defined as the "Process of giving the illusion of movement to drawings, models, or inanimate objects".

Nope.
Anime means animation in Japanese.
Cartoons are animation and can be called it.
So technically, they are the same thing. Anime and cartoons are very different, yes, but they're both animations- so I find it alright for people to call them cartoons.

Being technical, anime is a type of animated cartoon.

Being connotational, 'cartoons' and anime have numerous distinct differences.

Are cartoons and anime actually different? No.
Are Western cartoons and anime actually different? Yes.

I do not believe this subject should be tackled as a semantics debate on whether or not an anime is a cartoon, because technically, it is. Rather, I believe the more important issue to address here is whether or not being a 'cartoon' invalidates the entertainment value and legitimacy of the medium. Ultimately, terms such as 'anime' or 'cartoon' are simply categorical designators, referring to style and/or origin. However, that is all they are; designations. They have precisely zero bearing on the quality of the content in the medium, and people who wield the terms as if they did are simply ignorant, and should be ignored.

This is also ignoring the fact that it is a harmless hobby and if you enjoy it, another's disapproval - especially a foolishly derived one, should do nothing to dissuade, or even irritate you about your entertainment habits.

Well the reason many deny the fact that it technically is a cartoon is because they are ashamed. Many people look at it as childish or lame, thus they want it to be something "above".
