Anime is different from cartoons!

I don't care what people call it. I just know if anyone watches some anime they will see how many of them are pretty intelligent and well thought out. Not just slap stick humor.

Family Guy American dad The Simpsons are all cartoons to and people have no problem watching them. I think Japanese anime is much better then anything they do in America .

I'm responding again against my better judgment. I get the fact that anime fans hate when people think all anime is for children just because it's animated. They want people to know that there's more to it, deeper. I get it. I know b/c I also hate when people pigeonhole western style of animation by calling it 'slap stick' humour and saying they're just 'cartoons' like it's a dirty word . But since people aren't familiar with something they make generalizations. So I wouldn't worry about it too much. |

Anime is a form of cartoon, which is a form of animation. So technically cartoons do have actual stories and character development. Now, there are cartoons in places outside Japan that have both of those things. An example is Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel, The Legend of Korra. In France, there is Oban Star Racers and Code Lyoko. As for the difference, the real difference is that anime is a style of animation (cartoon) originating from Japan and it's the abbreviated form of the Japanese word for animation, animēshiyon. To summarize they are the same thing, which is simply animation, and whether it be 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional it doesn't matter. Animation in this sense is defined as the "Process of giving the illusion of movement to drawings, models, or inanimate objects". |

Nope.
Anime means animation in Japanese. Cartoons are animation and can be called it. So technically, they are the same thing. Anime and cartoons are very different, yes, but they're both animations- so I find it alright for people to call them cartoons. |
