Precisely. Which is unfortunate, because such an issue shouldn't exist - it amounts to nothing. Shame is counter-productive, especially when experienced over a hobby as relatively harmless as watching anime.

Well said. Sadly people will always be judgemental, and they will also try to avoid being singled out, thus leading to arguements like these.

When I explain to people who ask me what i'm watching I do open up by saying anime are Japanese cartoons. It goes deeper obviously, especially when compared to western cartoons but it doesn't change the fact they're cartoons.

Um...they are cartoons?

Listen, anime is written in katakana. (アニメ)
Katakana is used for foreign or made up words. (The word "Faito" comes from the English word Fight,so they write it in Katakana.)
Anime is just a shortened word for animation. Do you see アニメ-ション on official Japanese posts? That says Animation.
Animation = cartoons.

so they are cartoons.
Fact over opinion. Sorry.

For some reason, people find it offensive to equate American animation with Japanese animation. On the flip side, American animation is equated with everything else.

Go figure.

And whoever coined "Japanimation" in the very beginning was an idiot.

Anime is a cartoon but I call it anime. Just look at the art style from when anime first started its lot like western cartoons.

Like a lot of other people so nicely put it, Anime is cartoons.. Just japanese cartoons..
Whenever one of my friends asks me what anime is, I always reply with Japanese cartoons, just a bit different from normal cartoon.
Besides i love cartoons in general so i don't really mind. of course if they compare the Anime with normal cartoons i get a bit annoyed, but thats it, i don't see the big problem in that

First things first: Anime is cartoons. What's the matter with that?

I do understand your irritation though. It's not that they're cartoons that is the problem... THe problem is that in western culture, the word and genre of "cartoons" is associated with being childish or for kids. So when "people" (whoever they may be) call anime cartoons, it's not that they're saying that it's a bunch of moving drawings, it's that they're saying it's for little kids a.k.a. you're immature for watching kids shows. That's the misunderstanding that pisses me off.
That doesn't just go for Japanese anime either. There are some western animation shows that are just as good.

Stereotyping is so stupid.

Now, we're dealt with the problem, where many many many anime fans presume that anime only comes from Japan - and no where else. For now, that's true. However, it does not eliminate the possibility of anime made elsewhere.

Isn't anime just Japanese cartoons? By definition anyway.

Well in the end of the day its animation. Does it really matter what someone calls it?
