It doesn't bother me at all, because If you actually notice Anime is cartoon but from Japan it's just called differently. So getting upset about it is kinda dumb :T Plus the creator of the first anime did get the idea from American cartoon sooo yup.

I can't believe this is still an active topic of discussion. This argument has been beaten to death over the last 15 years. Anime is mostly an American coined term for Japanese animated shows. When Japanese refer to their animated cartoons they do not call them Japanese cartoons they just call them animations/cartoons. I understand we want to differentiate Japanese animations from Western animation because the Japanese animation content is by and large geared toward mature audiences, but it is a fact that anime as we know it falls under the classification of cartoons.

When I tell someone I watch anime, they're like "what's that?" I tell them "Japanese cartoons" to which they say "how can you understand it, do you know Japanese?" to which I have two replies:

1. blank stare (as in, really? you really think it's Japanese audio only?)
2. "Watashiwa nihongoga sukoshi wakarimasu"

then they mock me as though they're being racist to Chinese people and language. -.-

When I say that i watch cartoons, they look at me strange like i'm too old. But either way, i shrug it off, inform them of something spectacular they're missing, and flaunt my hobby in everyone's faces!

I don't care what they country of origin is, give me a good cartoon and I'll watch it over and over (speaking of which, i should watch Yobi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yobi,_the_Five_Tailed_Fox again >_> )

It bothers me. It's because where I live the word "cartoon" is associated with being childish, immature and something that's never serious. The only time I consider putting the word "cartoon" and "anime" in the same sentence is to explain what anime is to others who don't know of it.

Don't get me wrong, I believe they're both forms of animation, and calling anime Japanese cartoons is probably the simplest way of explaining what anime is to people. The content expected for the two are different although American animation (which is what I call it) has shown to be more mature and have signs of anime influence in recent years which is why some US shows are excepted in the anime community.

There are many forms of animation and Anime is one of them! They're FORMS of animation meaning they are animated, but EXECUTED DIFFERENTLY.

It's like saying "Google Chrome is Internet Explorer".
They're both web browsers, but there are differences. You wouldn't call Google Chrome "Internet Explorer" or vice versa.

"Cartoon is a form of animation"
"Anime is a form of animation"
That does not make cartoon an anime or vice versa.

Anime: a Japanese style of motion-picture animation, characterized by highly stylized, colorful art, futuristic settings, violence, and sexuality.

Cartoon: a motion picture using animation techniques to photograph a sequence of drawings rather than real people or objects.

They're styles and techniques of animating. Therefore they are a form of animation.
Cartoon = Form of Animation
Anime = Form of Animation

Technically, they're right. Anime is a type of cartoon. A Japanese cartoon. It might not be the same kind of cartoon as Family Guy or the Simpsons, but it still is. It does bother me, though, because when people call anime cartoons it's usually in a very condescending and degrading way. :/
