Correct. Can anybody tell me the name of the anime where my avatar came from?

ahem. as said before by someone else, cartoons are generic random goofy shows that bring everything back to normal and dead people alive in the next episode, most of the time even changing storyline.

anime though, is an actual story with a set plot and meaning, which comes from it being originally a graphic NOVEL. also, when a character dies, they don't magically appear fine in the next episode, they only come back by a very good reason or special power (e.g. dragonball z) and on top of that, i doubt a cartoon could keep a story going for 60 + episodes like most anime.

oh and here is the google definition of anime: "A style of animation that originated in Japan, characterized by stark colorful graphics, depicting characters in action-filled plots." hmmmm dont see much of that on cartoon network lol

You have obviously not seen many anime out there. There are plenty of anime that have no set plot or meaning. Many animes have started out as original and were not adapted from manga at all. Many series are just fun series that give off a slice of life and are completely episodic. Actually a lot of anime are random and generic.

actually i have seen plenty of anime and even randomness like azumanga daioh promotes friendship and stuff as its meaning but not in a corny way like saturday night cartoons

If you look at all ecchi, half the stuff is just random slice of life which are all really corny. Hell FLCL was pretty random at times with all the anecdotes so you can say the same thing.

Anime budded off from American animation anyway. Disney inspired the style. There are plenty of cartoon that promote typical ideals in a similar fashion.

Who ever dont agree with the title is just wrong....ANIME is NOT the same thing as CARTOONS. cartoons are bugs bunny and jimmy neutrons, sad that i kno that, and anime is completely awesome things like X and naruto and samurai champloo and cool stuff like that. so for everyone who likes anime, if it's in games or just movies, THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANIME AND CARTOONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

ok, you're a moron.

ANIME IS JUST THE JAPANESE WORD FOR CARTOON, get over it japanophiles. In the west, we've adapted the word to mean any animation that comes from japan.

There is PLENTY of anime out there that isn't based on manga. Onegai Sensei is the first one that pops into my mind. Did you know that Haruhi and FMP are based off of novels? Let's not even get into anime based off of games. I could keep going with other example and scenarios, but I'll stop there. Most anime is based off manga, but certainly not all of it.

There is also plenty of none sensical random anime out there that makes Azumanga Daioh look like Gone with the Wind. And a lot of it is very similar in nature and style to american animation. Also, not all anime looks like what you would expect. Here is an example of a very popular anime in japan that most americans have never even heard of:

I spent several months in japan, and a decent bit of that time was spent channel surfing japanese TV. I saw a lot of anime, though very little of it was what I was expecting. Naruto and Bleach were primetime, but the stuff I was used to watching typically wasn't shown until later evening. However, there was a ton of children's anime and other random shows similar to the one above that I saw on quite a bit. Are those not anime? Of course they are. They are japanese cartoons, they're just not the same as the ones that non-japanese fans are used to seeing.

People, you can't define anime by your own very limited understanding of it. At least wiki it for christ's sake. It's a HUGE medium and we only see a fraction of it over here. I've seen a ton of anime (and I'd put money far more than about 90% of the users around here) and I'd never dream of saying I like all anime, that all anime is awesome, that all anime is better than western animation, or defining anime with such narrow definitions.

Honestly, I didn't think fans were this ignorant of anime anymore. This sounds like an argument you would have heard at a con in 2000 between tenchi muyo cosplayers, not 2007 on board loaded with unlicensed anime.

So cartoon characters don't die? Uncle Ben (Spiderman), Soloman Grundy (Justice League), Warren McGinnis (Batman Beyond), Jimmy Olsen (Superman: The Animated Series), Bleeding Gums Murphy (The Simpsons).

So cartoons can't be serious? Justice League, Avatar the last airbender, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Ben 10, Metalocalypse, SWAT Kats, Thundercats, Transformers, X-Men, Spiderman, Fantastic 4.

If you think anime is not the same as cartoon, tell me one little thing, what does anime stand for.

(Still wondering about my avatar)

Overall i rather like to call it "Anime" rather than Cartoon. At least in my belief they are different, but if people wants to call it cartoon or something else, well that is up to them.

Well, I do get kind of annoyed, not because they call them 'cartoons', but they assume all anime is either hentai(like Love Hina, which is not a bad anime by the way), magical girl (like sailor moon), or just plain kid shonen (pokemon, yu gi oh)
I mean.. .not all anime is like that :]
Basically, just saying... I dislike stereotypists (though I might be one myself...)
