Okay, I'm sick and tired of this. Anime and cartoons are the SAME THING!!!

There are two definitions of anime I'll agree with. The literal definition of anime is animation, so, when you go to Japan they refer to Disney and "Tom & Jerry" as foreign anime . Outside of Japan, anime is referred to cartoons specifically from Japan, which, considering the quantity and unique qualities of Japanese anime compared to Western cartoons, is fine. Tha's where the misunderstanding comes in.

ANIME IS NOT A STYLE!!! It just comes from a different culture, so of course the creators are going to have their own ideas of how to do a cartoon! Many anime artists, especially the pioneers like Osamu Tezuka and Go Nagai, were and still are just as inspired by our Disney and superhero-comic cartoons just as we currently are by their post-apocalyptc tales, fantasy adventures, and fan-servicey harem romance-comedies.

And of course there are Western "cartoons" with violence and romance in them, what do you think "Heavy Metal" and "Beauty and the Beast" is? And if you're thinking of anime as a style for teens and adults with a more complex semi-realistic narrative, then you're basically denying that famous Japanese series like "Doraemon", "Crayon Shin-Chan", "Chbi Maruko-Chan", and "Pokemon" are anime. All four of those are non-violent kids series with some possible educational value and ageless characters and episodic casual storylines.

Sorry if I overreacted, I'm just stupified by hearing this argument. Then again, words and definitions are a human creation, so I don't see why they can't expand and change.

ok wen you think of cartoons you think of somthing childish like looney toons
but i find that anime is different because cartoons are normally directed towards a younger age group, and anime is sorta somthing like a cartoon for people a bit older like when youwatch anime on ytv it tells you its for older kids.

They're both cartoons, just Anime is different.
I dont really mind when people call anime cartoons, and i'm not offended if they say "omg, ur still watching cartoons"
Cause in reality, i am still watching cartoons...
I watch both anime and american cartoons, i'm not growing up. So sue me.
Lol, but sometimes it annoyes me cause when people call anime cartoons, they're usually saying that its at the same degree as something on Pbs kids... So when people call anime cartoons, they're usually just makeing fun of me cause i am addicted to anime. That is what i hate.

Anime is a type of cartoon, just for (usually) a more mature audience and a different style.
But it does bug me when my dad says "You and your stupid cartoons." as if I'm regressing into childhood.

First things first azrael910 you are like my freakin hero right now, you explained everything perfectly, you quite frankly rock.

Next, why is everyone so stupid when it comes to cartoons? firecrouch, have you ever seen Metalocalypse? Watch that cartoon and tell me it's for little kids, some of you are plain retarded, look at Aqua Teen Hunger Force, sure it's mostly comedy but not comedy that you let a 5 year old look at, idiots! I guess Pokemon is for adult too, funny I never see any adult situations. Last but not least firecrouch Hamtaro is 100% japanese animation, funny how you didn't know that, they showed that show in the afternoon and in the morning, WOW that's horrible hours for such a teen and adult oriented show!

Anime is a cartoon though Here's the story people-

The Japanese wanted to make movies like Hollywood and stuff, but they only have people who look japanese, so they could'nt do movies that weren't set in Japan.

So then someone saw the cartoons over in the west and adopted that idea, so now they could make thier characters look anyway they wanted!

They also took the name from us "Animation"-"Anime" So there you go.

Wait, wait, wait -- WHAT?!! I never said that American cartoons are only for kids, that's why I brought up "Heavy Metal"! And I brought up "Hamtaro" as an example of anime that doesn't fall into the anime stereotype of teen/adult cartoon, I just posted it as a question to get someone's opinion on the matter.

I totally agree with azrael910, but I guess LordDolmus didn't understand what I was trying to say. Sheeesh .

Whatever, this whole discussion has got me mad. Sorry it sounded like you were saying cartoons are for kids. When will this thread reach a cross road? So far it's the same thing over and over and over over and over and over over and over and over over and over and over over and over and over over and over and over over and over and over again.

^ I know its like new morons who haven't even read any of the other post just come and insist that cartoons and anime are different just b/c they wish it so they don't sound like kids, or what ever retarded reason they have for trying to seperate the two??...some ppl...oi

Cartoons can be for Adults and kids

Simpsons, family guy, Ren n Stimpy, Roccos modern life not for kids

Hey arnold for kids but have romance ideas, for godsakes even the rugrats have romantic themes (the orgi not grown up)

Anime that is childish
Doremon, Unico

and for the ppl saying anime is different b/c ppl die every day in "cartoons" and come back uhm...what do you call anime characters falling off buildings being shot being punched and thrown across a freaking rooms in real life ppl don't get up from s like that, or kids running entire schools wts? and fifteen year olds living on their own and everyone treating it like its normal

and giant fighting robots...dont exist so yeah come up with something better...

their is so much fantasy in anime its not even funny

and the culture difference is why they are drawn different, it would look weird if all american cartoonist were drawing all asian background and type of houses, and kids having to go to cram school b/c we dont have those in america, and while we have schools that wear uniforms they arent the majoirty like in japan...

I really wonder how big some of you ppls worlds are when you wake up in the morning

No, i think your post got mixed up with some kid who came in, got shut down and attempted to take the high road by saying "well i'm not a nerd like you guys i just watch naruto."

The reason I post to in the level of detail that I do is that maybe - just maybe - a few people read all the way through it and get something from it. There is nothing wrong with being ignorant about anything as long as one is willing to take the time and listen when a misperception (like this topic) is carefully explained.
