Nissan is the best japanese auto maker

I think Toyota has to be the best Japanese Car company. Just because it is currently the worlds largest car manufacturer. With the Corolla being one of the best selling cars and the indestructible Hi-lux.

I'd probably have to say it's a tie between Honda and Toyota.

Reason being is that Honda's release of the civic CVCC was one of the cars that started the econobox popularity that helped bring about the end of the muscle car era. The lack of safety equipment, prices of the conversions, etc. were some of the bigger factors, but parents also wanted to give their kids 'safer' alternatives, and then it was mini cars like the cvcc that started getting a ton of sales. The big three released cars like the pinto and gremlin to take on the small japanese automakers, but the big 3's attempts were total failures.

Also, the engines were almost bulletproof at the time. They were able to attain very high revolutions per minute with the sacrifice of torque, yet in terms of overall balance, you couldn't deny the fact hondas were fun to drive and reliable cars. The engines were so well made that although it took a lot of research and development from other companies, the aftermarket support is quite great which was a big plus.

Toyota revolutionized a lot of different ideas and set many trends thanks to some cars like the 2000GT, but to me their biggest marvel was the Supra series (I'm including the celica-supras in this reference). Their luxury cars from the celsiors to aristos (later given Lexus badging in the US) were amazing in quality of ride and reliablity, materials weren't cheap, and weren't as expensive as other cars at the time that they were competing with (namely Benz and BMW). The MKIV supra's 2JZ twin turbo engine was probably their best feat at the fact with stock internals it could handle about 700 horsepower (though in some mags like Modified it has been proven that some people can attain about 800+rwhp on stock internals). They've proven time and time again they can build anything from high performance cars like the Supra to highly economical vehicles like the Prius.

Theres alot of different variables here. If you want Reliability, Honda all the way, if you want performance, its a toss up between Mazda, nissan, mitsubishi or subaru.

Its been my experience however that Mazda is the best bang for your buck, so my vote is there.

Lately Toyota has dropped the ball in my opnion, they just arent what they used to be. A buddie in my racing club recently bought a New Corolla, and we were appaled at the quality of it, He exchanged it for a Mitsubishi Lancer only a few days later.

Mazda - I like the company's philosophy and emphasis on light(er)weight sporty performance. Like the FD RX-7 being comparable in weight to the aluminum Honda NSX and then proceeding to crush it in performance -
