All I have to do is study a lil bit then take the test. I usually get an 87 or above.

These days I've been wasting paper by writing out the same paragraphs over and over again, memorising it and then writing it down, saying it back to myself or in my head and then writing it down again.
And when I can't memorise it I stab things with my pen out of frustration. My table has become a "join-the-dots" canvas.

I always keep telling myself I'll start studying at least a week before the test ... but I always end up not doing anything before max two days before ... Then I read throught the chapters or whatever the test is going to be about a couple of times ... and do all the homework I haven't done before.... Surprisingly I get pretty good grades in almost everything ... I totally don't deserve it, but I'm not complayning ^_^;;;

Associate specific components with something visual that I could recall when needed. In this case, I usually rely on the visual aspect of films.

For example I assign the biography of poet John Gower to my personal montage of John Woo's 'Hardboiled'. His birthdate = a decrypted message (don't let the tiger bite its tail) . His poem 'Confessio amantis' = a gunfight at the tea house (that's as in assigning a line per a specific visual action of that scene).

I also restrict a general subject to a specific band, e.g. when studying sociology I listen to nothing but Sham 69; and when the socio-political history of an Italian town, it's nothing but Killing Joke. When I'm stuck I just have to skim through the band's lyrics/songs until I find one that I earlier associated with a specific component of .the subject.

It's stupid but it works for me.

In a test if I come across a question about something I didn't study, I use something I already know as a comparative example to answer the question.

Then continue to study 1 hrs++...then rest again
Then continue study again for 1hrs++...then continue rest again.

Well, I'm very bad at spacing out my time of studying like at least 30minutes or more each day. So bad When I study though I read the materials and write them in my own words so I can understand what I'm reading. I tried memorizing notes and textbooks in the same exact way it is written, but it takes too much to remember. But if I have to memorize them or speeches exactly the way it is written, I'd start off with saying and repeating the first couple of lines, like let's say lines 1-4. Then I'd continue onto 5-8 and starting with line 4. After I've done memorizing 1-4. It's very time consuming, but works well for me.

I also try mnemonic devices like roygbiv in remembering things. There are many other ways I try to remember things to help me study.

If you want to do all-nighters and cram the day before the test, it's good to take a cold shower, drink lots of water, and take a nap beforehand. But I think sleeping 6-9 hours is good, eating dark chocolate/gum before the test, taking a shower and eating a good breakfast can make you feel refreshed and awake for a test. I tried it and I felt really good the day of the test.

I have a really short attention span, so I'm pretty bad at concentrating. In general though my strategy is to review one lecture block then take a break, go back and review the next, etc. I try to read through my notes and make sure I understand them, writing down or putting a post-it where I don't understand.

Then I go bug my friends about these areas until they shame me with how much more they've studied.

Speaking of which, have a major exam tomorrow - should go do just that. Or maybe I'll procrastinate by reading through the thread for tips.

^ You could write in squid ink. That would be all natural.

Back on test taking strategies, I try to picture all the diagrams in my head and think out through the cycle. If I'm memorizing a certain synthesis, I will put aside my notes and picture all the curly arrows, etc. in my head.

Also thinking aloud the formulas/reading them out helps too. Not just with the symbols, but what the symbols mean.
