I think it's mainly because most people don't enjoy thinking. If they can avoid thinking, they will. I suppose that would make it laziness, but more specifically mental laziness.

I think it's totally messed up that in (American) schools you generally have to take twice as much English as Math, but since nobody likes to bother to use proper grammar even if they know what is grammatically correct it's not surprising that it ended up that way.

I'm guessing it's probably texting and all of that stuff.

I'm not one to correct someone's grammar, but I will (most of the time) type with proper grammar and correct spelling because I want someone to take my words seriously.

I don't use slang in real life or on the internet, but I'm sure a lot of people do it to type faster. I can tell you I used to use it a lot, but I had a good idea one day and that is "Maybe if I type in proper english people might understand me better."

They do it to destroy language. If "Whore" and "Mary Sue" mean the same thing then two threads on this forum are duplicates. The meanings and uses of words matter because if any word can mean anything and any word can be used in anyway. We will not understand each other.

I personally think it is because a lot of people don't read books these days. I learned more about how to read and write English from reading books than any English class. If you read a lot, and you see a mistake in English, you can usually tell that it is wrong and correct it, even without knowing the reason for it.

y cause ppl thinks it's fun 2 talk like this wbu? <-------- This shit right here pisses me off to know end. If you are to fucking lazy to write a complete sentence or spell out your words then don't type at all. Your just embarrassing yourself along with the rest of the human race. Also people use spell check, I know that I am autistic but even I can use something so simple that comes with chrome or fire-fox.

I think that it is not pure laziness or rebellion. I think many people cannot write well even if they absolutely must. I don't like over use of text message "speak" and other shortcuts in writing, excessive spelling errors, a lack of punctuation, lack of capitalization, and other English grammar errors. If English is your first language, there's really no excuse for all of the ridiculousness, in my opinion. While I agree that we don't all have to write academically online, I don't think we have to write like we're illiterate.

Those who say that it doesn't matter how you write because people will (always) understand you are wrong. There are plenty of times when, for example - on Crunchyroll threads, someone has written with extremely poor grammar, spelling, and shortcuts, and I did not understand what they were saying. I shouldn't have to spend a lot of time trying to decode what you're saying. Seriously.

I would say that part of it is that people don't care as much about reading, it seems. Literature isn't as focused on, either in schools, or at home by parents and by the individual, as it should/could be. I also imagine that auto-correct technology on browsers, word processors, and phones allows people not to need to learn and remember spelling and grammar as much as before these technologies will popular and in nearly every home.

I used to be excited and happy about writing essays, creative writing class, and spelling bees.
