I do get the topic starter;
before the internet become the it thing, we used to get drilled on correct spelling.
Well, just cherish the ability and don't forget that content is a lot more important than letter arrangement.

Texting, Internet speak, or whatever you want to call is just another language (dialect is probably more accurate but meh...) , just as the formal writing of academics is another language. The lack of grammar and spelling in texting was originally useful because of cost and limits on how large a message could be. It has stuck because of speed and the ease of its use. Symbols (because a word is just a combination of symbols) and rules useful to a language will be kept, ones that aren't useful will be thrown away or forgotten through disuse, and new ones will be invented if nothing fits the need.
Is this Internet speak appropriate to use in all places? No, but it will affect the other language it interacts with. Those other languages will also have an effect on Internet speak. Evolution moves towards whatever is most suited to the environment. Language evolves, grows, and dies like an organism.

I have some theories...

1. It's easier to stylize writing than to learn it. In other words, people are just too lazy to write real words and sentences.
2. People think because it's the internet, you don't have to care about it. I mean every time someone gets called out on grammar, they pull out the overused "it's the internet, not an English essay!". As if that makes it okay !
3. People just don't care or don't notice. To be honest, I never really noticed till I heard people pointing it out.
4. People may just feel relaxed and "casual" online, so they don't really find the need to talk properly. For example, online, Germans always use the informal way of talking because they probably feel the internet is a place that calls for casualty. The same could go for English users.
5. People are just stupid.

As long as I understand the person, I don't mind. If it's "1!k3 +h!$" ("like this" if you can't read), then i'm annoyed.

You'd be surprised what people do when they're bored.

I'd also like to mention that a lot of texting auto-correctors don't necessarily auto-correct correctly... which may play a part. Between texts on phones miss-auto-correcting and actual children who don't know enough vocabulary and just type what sounds right, and people who simply didn't get much out of English classes... grammar has gone downhill quite a bit.

Of cusore, you culod slitl tpye lkie tihs and slitl be udtennslardabe, albeit might take a bit longer to read through.

I don't know. I used to write internet words but now I'm getting older and should use correct grammar.

Chatspeak happened. I hate, hate, hate, HATE chatspeak! It's lazy and kids aren't learning proper grammar! The computer WILL NOT do everything for you and it's not going to kill you to learn grammar! And besides, how can a person get their point across if their grammar-less message can't be interpreted? (I don't know about ya'll, but I have trouble deciphering chatspeak, it's like a foreign language to me.)
