Someone please explain to me the term "emo". I live in germany. When we say emo, we're talking about someone who listens to emo and dresses that way. Sometimes instead of saying "This is so gay..." we say "This is so emo..." because it's better around gay friends. The way I understood emo, it's short for emotional, and that's why the music sounds so whiny. So we make fun of emos. But on crunchyroll I noticed a lot of people use emo as a curse. Like emo is the worst thing they can think of? Are emos in the U.S. like a plague? Do you mean something else by emo?I never paid much attention to the emos around me, so I'm curious as to why they're so despicable to a lot of crunchyroll members.
Feel free to discuss why you hate emos. Or why you like to be emo.

And crunchyroll emos, I'm really not trying to make anyone feel uncomfortable, I was just wondering.

^ I'm in the same boat... My mates in Britain all seem to hate "Emos" like the plague, however I've never truly understood what it's all about. Though if "Tokyo Hotel" were to fall into the category I'd understand why people dislike them. The most I understand is that emos are "depressive", which may or may not be a bad thing... though were the apathetic I'd have to take a negative view of them.
I've been labeled as an emo myself before!?! Is it just a new name for Alternative/Punk types?
Any help?

I think Americans find Emos so despicable because now it is a fashion statement of sorts....rather than the type of music they listen to, most Emos are categorized by the way they dress, act, whether they have piercings etc etc...it just seems like if you walk around all you see are a bunch of depressed clones...I guess that aggravates some people. I, for one, don't really care. I listen to bands that are considered "Emo" but I consider myself to be a generally happy person...I guess it's all based on the opinion of the onlooker

Hehe, I think it's sort of funny because all music is emotional in some sort of way.

Emo - Whiny self-obsessed semi-goth who likes wearing black clothing and mixing in other colors with it, generally told apart from a normal goth by the fact that Emos whine alot more than the Goth crowd, also may be referred to the hairstyle where 1 eye or half the face is covered by hair hanging from the head. Also emos often threaten with self-mutilation.

Not to be confused by the pansy-Goth(Marilyn Manson)

Yeah, the hairdo...I like it actually and I don't mind boys wearing make up. It's just, if you're going to be chronically depressed and suicidal and all, that's goth territory, isn't it? They have to be pissed (the goths) that they were robbed of their main trait

the reason i find emo's so annyoing is that they seem to think it's cool to paint strawberry gashes down their arms and any other part of their body that they can get their hands on .

in answer to Xrn_the_Nigma, they do it because 1) they might think it cool. 2) it blocks about supposed emotional pain that they are going through. it's much easier to deal with physical pain that emotional pain. therefore they use it as a stress relief. only problem is that once they have done it too much, they go kind of numb towards it and have to cut deeper to feel anything.

i think that emos just think that they are being 'cool' and 'mysterious' when they act all morbid and depressed. over half of them probably don't have anything wrong with them.

they want to be all individual and the 'no one gets me' thing they have. so then why are they all wonderinng around in converse and black skinnies. how individual! everyone's doing it! and the 'no one gets me' thing. no one's going to be able to get to know them if they shut other people out all the time!

i have two friends who cut themselves really deeply now because they have been doing it for so long. one tries and distract herself from her life because she has an ED. the other just has ADD in a nutshell. all she wants is attention and she gets it through cutting herself and being loud.

all i want to say is. to all emos out there. don't cut. just please don't do it. wear your clothes, listen to your music, just don't cut. you couldn't imagine what it is like to sit on the side watching your friends do shit to themselves while you can't do anything.

i find it annoying how most people who call other people "emo" don't even know what it is. And when you ask them they reel off into some stupid explanation on how "emos" listen to heavy music, slit their wrists and wear black and skinny jeans.
i admit i only have a vague idea of what "emo" is but that's related to the music aspect and not the image aspect, and that's why i don't resort to using the label. if you don't know what it is then don't make yourself seem horrifically ignorant by calling anyone "emo".

Emo seems to be the same in America as it is here. What everyone seems to be missing is that it is an individual's choice whether they want to follow this fashion trend or not and yes, as kyserin said, it does appear to be just a fashion trend, usually among those from comfortable backgrounds. I don't think it will last long. Oh, while we are discussing the emo look and stereotypes, don't forget the eyeliner.

^^^if your making a point about me, i was only trying to say something about their attitudes towards things that shouldn't be taken so lightly.

i realise that i made some points in there that were kind of judgemental of me and i apologise. it's just that it really annoys me that they think that their life is bad when it really isn't. who cares if your parents have done something that you don't agree with. it happens. your a teenager it's almost certain that it's going to happen!

^kyserin, I wasn't making a point about you personally. What I will say about you is that you seem really eloquent and thoughtful. I agree with a lot of what you said. I have seen a lot of trends come and go, and I just hope these disturbed people don't do themselves any lasting damage. However, if they do, it is their decision.
