Black Lagoon.
High paced modern day action. Feels like watching a hollywood blockbuster. Perfect for someone new to anime.

well i aslo started with naruto! I recommend anime shows that you should let them watch, are the ones that aren't too hard for them to understand! give them something easy to decipher! especially for the first-timers!

don't give them FMA at first! it's too complicated! give them a show like.....hhhmmmmmmm....eto.....Galaxy Angels

FullMetal Alchemist and Fruits Basket are the two i usually recommend to newbies. I know several people who NEVER watched anime but absolutly loved FMA. I'd recommend .hack//SIGN (that was my first one) if i think they could understand it. darn thing is confusing if ur not paying attention >.<

If i'm being myself, i won't normally suggest to anyone (more less an anime non-viewer) good animes i've seen and love. From time to time, i do brag how this and that anime's a hit though.

I'm a proud yaoi fangirl but to introduce to anyone the yaoi genre is a bit risky so i think the best choices would be:

(for girls)
~ Ouran High School Host Club
~ Bokura ga Ita
~ NANA (one of my fave!)
~ Paradise Kiss (ParaKiss)
~ Gakuen Alice
~ Full Metal Panic
~ FLCL
~ Saikano

(for guys)
~ Death Note
~ Code Geass
~ Gundam Seed/Destiny

FLCL. Are you kidding? A teacher showed this anime in class, and even I was like 'wtf?!'. People will definately get the wrong impression about anime when you show them FLCL.

I'd say a Ghibli movie (for girls) and Bleach (for boys). I showed my boyfriend Death Note first, but I probaby shouldn't have done that...
Then I showed him Azumanga Daioh, which also wasn't a very good choice.

i would recommend one of the "mainstream" animes like Bleach, One piece, Naruto only if they were into action/comedy. But depending on the person id go for a more in-depth anime with more talking that also has a nice comedic theme in it like Zero no Tsukaima, If they are most seriously toned id show them Code geass, Death note, and School days although school days scared the hell outta me
