um..... DBZ 'cause it has a lot of lessons in life. Maybe, we'll just ask what kind of genre do they like and find a right anime for them in other words... influence them

i'd recommend something more moderate, not too much violence, slapstick humour or nudity/harem.
definitely movies from ghibli for all ages, makoto shinkai and satoshi kon for more mature audiences, also toki wa kakeru shoujo.

as for series, i'd prolly recommend a mix of genres depending on age and what they like: NANA & nodame cantabile, death note & monster, mushishi & kino no tabi, FMA & seirei no moribito, kanon & ouran & fruits basket, chevalier d'eon & rurouni kenshin, blood+ & trinity blood maybe hellsing, ergo proxy, GTO, jyu oh sei & terra e.

most of the miyazaki movies (my dad is not an anime fan, but love spirited away and princess mononoke)
and definitely mushishi
probably not something very violent right away
slayers could be good if you know the perosn well enough for them to like it, i got one of my friend into anime using slayers

I would recommend Death Note or Code Geass because people who don't watch anime are serious type persons. The aforementioned animes really deal with human physiology and the way of the world.

If it's my friends I know what they like. Sometimes if you just sit around and watch animes by yourself in a highly populated area people will start watching over your shoulder and that's how you know whether or not people around you are even interested.

To the general population I would recomend something like Gundam Seed or for a younger audience Inuyasha, the dubbed versions of course, because they're relatively easy to get into.

Full Metal Alchemist is also a good one for people who are just starting off.

I find that if you get into stuff like Shinigami and Coalians with someone who is not into anime you'll just scare them off, but things like alchemy and genetic engineering is not such a far stretch that they'd shy away from it.

What you have to have through is characters that aren't too anime based, so characters that anyone can relate to or else people who don't appreciate anime will only look at you in disbelief as you try and prove to them that zanpakutos having a name is completely relevant and necessary to the plot of Bleach....

I cant think of one right now but it has to be
1. one with some good story plot
2. doesnt contain absurd number of panty scene
3. uses less of japanese term such as senpai, or ittadakimasu
